Largest Public/Private University in terms of student enrollment

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I did search the forum and got tired after awhile of sorting through a list full of "Harvard vs. this school" and "Ivies vs. that school" threads. grumpy face

So what are the largest public and private universities in terms of student enrollment. I've heard rumors that the largest public university is Penn State.

For many years the biggest was Ohio State, but I'm not sure that is true any more.

I think that the largest private school is NYU. It just may be Stanford, but I'm pretty sure it's NYU.

The largest public is probably Ohio State (37,509 undergrad; 50,995 total) ... in a virtual tie with UT-Austin (37,377 undergrad; 50,377 total). That's a lot of students.

THE 10 LARGEST PUBLICS:

1 Ohio State University (50,000+)

2 University of Texas-Austin (50,000+)

3 University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (50,000+)

4 Arizona State University-Tempe (49,000)

5 University of Florida-Gainesville (48,000)

6 Michigan State University (45,000)

7 Texas A&M University-College Station (44,000)

8 Pennsylvania State University-University Park (41,000)

9 University of Wisconsin-Madison (41,000)

10 University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign (40,000)

THE 10 LARGEST PRIVATES (that doesn't sound right does it?!):

1 New York University 38,000

2 University of Southern California 32,000

3 Boston University 30,000

4 Columbia University 23,000

5 Harvard University 21,000

6 University of Pennsylvania 20,000

7 Cornell University 20,000

8 Syracuse University 19,000

9 Johns Hopkins 18,000

10 George Washington University 18,000

This list has some inaccuracies. BYU should be about #3 or #4 on the list of privates --> 30K fulltime students. http://unicomm.byu.edu/about/factfile/quickfacts.aspx?lms=18

BYU is public isn't it?

Nope, BYU is the private post-secondary Mormon capital of the world...I have 19 neighbors that will probably be going there.

Oh wow, I feel honored

Thanks for the list Alexandre!

BTW Yoshi, Stanford is one of the largest universities in campus size, that may have confused you.

To some extent, these figures are a little misleading. USC for example, at least half the number shown is grad students and they may just be enrolled for a class or two, part-time etc.

Stats etc. can be skewed all kinds of ways. Like the reference to Standford's physical size, it is said to be the largest campus in the U.S., but I think the stat really refers to all of Stanford's holdings, their med center, etc. which really have nothing to do with the campus in actuality.

And you know for a fact that all? 25%, 50%? 75%? of those graduate, and professional, students are only taking a course or two as opposed to taking a course or two and writing a dissertation, or conducting research, and/or teaching? How does that differ from any other University say NYU or Ohio State?

Best laugh in a not so great day - thanks Alexandre, you get the pun of the year award!

Bullwinkle, that's the case with many schools. Columbia has over 15,000 graduate students compared to just 7,000 undergrads. And roughly 4,000 of those 23,000 students are part timers. Michigan has 14,000 graduate students and 24,000 undergraduates. Of those 38,000 students, roughly 4,000 are also part-timers. But whether part time or full time, those students still take classes and space and exhaust resources.

Cangel, glad to put a smile on your face. hehe
