I am new to UIUC's admission's process. Does the LAS college at UIUC use a formula (numbers, not essays and sensitivity to intangibles such ECs) to assess applicants? I am familiar with University of Iowa's process, which uses a formula based on class rank and ACT score.

There has in the past (and nothing currently indicates it will change) been a computered generated selection index that relies heavily on class rank and test score to provide a projected GPA in college. The actual formula is not published. How it is used by each college varies. With LAS, many above a certain specified level will be admitted and many below another level rejected without much further review (except to check for unusual circumstances in the files). Those in between have further file review. The levels used vary from year to year and can also vary among departments in LAS. The engineering college is similar but uses levels for automatic admit and deny that generally leaves vast majority in the in-between area. Business usually specifies no levels and does file reviews for all.

thanks, and I guess you answered the logical next question: what is the formula?

At Iowa, they spelled it out. So you are saying that at UIUC, another public school, they do not tell the paying public what the specific criteria are when arriving at the selection index?
