Last comments please! UVa vs Tufts

Out of roughly 11 schools that I got accepted, I finally narrowed down to 2. UVa and Tufts. Please give me some information about the two schools!

I'm OOS for UVa. I prefer smaller classes but wish to stay in a beautiful campus. I'm going to study Economics, Public Affairs or International Relations (Foreign Affairs in UVa, I think). I cannot visit any schools since I'm international, but where do you think I should go?

My general idea is that:

Tufts-
+ Close to Boston - More cultural exchange, vibrant, and more INTERNSHIP opportunities
+ Fabulous IR program
- Weak economics (not sure about this, but nobody seems to say Tuft's Econ is strong)

UVa-
+ Beautiful Campus
+ Generally strong in all academics
+ Awesome atheletics
- TOO BIG
- Weak in Economics (I'm not in McIntire.)

Any suggestions?

I think it truly depends on what you’re looking for in a school. Both are really good institutions. If you want the “whole package” so-to-speak, UVA would probably be a better fit (i.e. sports, very active Greek system, social activities galore, warmer weather, etc.). On the other hand, if you’re interested more in internship opportunities in an urban area, a very diverse student body, a larger metropolitan area, a student body whose social activities often revolve more around academic pursuits, etc. then Tufts would be a better fit. I believe they’re both comparable in status/recognition, so you really can’t go wrong with either. Good luck!

Eww not tufts. I think going to a small liberal arts like tufts really takes away from the college experience. Also even though UVA is large the sense of community is fantastic.

If you wanna be thought of as the lesser version of the school down street, go to Tufts

wahoomb, you have a point…Tufts is like right next to Harvard…:(

Boston (and Cambridge) have MANY MANY universities and colleges. Here in Boston people see Tufts as an equivalent to schools like BC and Harvard in many ways. It is not seen as “that other school down the street.” And Harvard really isn’t all that near to Tufts in reality. Cambridge vs. Boston (Medford). I feel like for you Tufts would be better because of the quality of the Fletcher school. Tufts economics are pretty good as far as I know, nothing mind blowing, but deffinately not a joke either.

Oh and Tufts isn’t the Liberal Arts college it used to be, ha ha it’s not scary like Amherst or Williams.

That being said…go with your gut instincts. I loved Tufts, but UVa is really a better fit for my needs so I’m going to UVa. Both schools are fantastic so either way you will get a great education, met great people and have a great time.

UVA isn’t a BIG school by the numbers. Compared to Berkeley and Michigan, UVA is significantly smaller. Enrollment is around 3000 undergrads per year. The campus is big and beautiful.

And the econ program is not weak. McIntire is a totally different department and it’s an undergrad business school where the program is easier than if you were studying econ. Econ students at UVA go on to work in private equity firms like Oaktree and the world bank, so the program gives you a lot of post-graduate opportunities.
