So, I have an oral exam tomorrow morning for my language class, and I'm getting increasingly nervous. I had thought I'd be okay and cool about it, but I'm starting to lose my calm.

Do you all have any advice for me? This is my first year of college and college-level language courses, but I'm in my language's 202 class, so I feel like they expect more of me. I'm doing really well and I feel like I have a good grip of it, but my accent is a bit rough and I tend to blank when I'm really nervous.

My mom (a language professor) told me horror stories of students completely zoning out on her and bursting out into tears in front of her, and I DON'T want that to happen to me.

From a peer standpoint, what's it like? What should I expect? It's supposed to last ten minutes, I believe.

Hehe, I have an oral exam coming up later this week, so I feel for you. Just breathe in and breathe out. :D

Since this is right before Thanksgiving break, your prof will probably ask you questions about what you’ll be doing for it, and that’s AWESOME. Just know how to say “turkey,” “family,” “food,” “so-and-so’s-house”, etc. Also, since it’s on a Monday, be ready to talk about your weekend. Just general conversational stuff in addition to the vocab and themes of your book.

IME, they just want to make sure you can understand and respond. Of course your accent isn’t going to be perfect (gosh, my French accent sucks), so no worries there. They understand.

Also, don’t ignore your mom’s advice. I remember from your last post that she teaches a different language, but she still has experience giving oral examinations. Maybe call her up and have her ask you questions in English to which you can respond in language whatever. Or better yet, call a buddy from class and have a ten minute conversation with them. There’s your practice right there!

Relax, rest up, and hydrate before you go in. For my first one my mouth went dry because I was so scared. Water will be your friend. but it’s really no big deal.
