I was looking on UNC's website about 10 minutes ago and noticed information about placement into some specific math courses.

I am a Biology/pre-med major, so I must take math courses. The admissions officer on the blog, however, informed students that registration into these certain classes at CTOPS required a certain grade on the Math II Subject Test.

Apparently, I would be able to take it in May, but I have a few questions:

How difficult is the Math II Subject Test?
Do any current students have advice regarding this information?
Since I am barely above average on math, how do you think I will perform on the test?
Does Math II strongly resemble the math portion of the SAT I?

I really want to say that it resembles it, but is a bit harder.

If you want to take the subject test, you can, but I would do one of two other things.

1) Wait for your AP Calculus score to come out if you took that
2) Just take the math placement test at UNC. It's free if I remember correctly. You might not be able to sign up for certain classes at CTOPS, but remember that a lot of room opens up during the first week of classes.

I just don't think taking the subject test would be worth it at this point for you.

Math II is much harder than the simple math sections on the SAT. This test requires quite a bit of review and higher thinking skills, but the curve is bigger than the one for math I tests, so you can miss a few and still get 800.
Buy a review book/practice problems. I bought a book and did 13 practice tests the week before the test and got a 800, so it's definitely doable even if you are iffy about it now. I'd say go for it!

when i asked someone in admissions they said they didnt offer a math placement test??? i was told if you didnt have an AP/SAT II score you would just have to start in the lowest math course, which from what i understood is a seminar type class, and doesnt even count towards your graduation credits.

I didn't think there was a math placement test either, JackieSaurus. But there is an english placement test. I want to place out of Eng. 102, but I made a 660 on writing, which only gives me credit for 100 and 101.

I think I will take the Math SAT II! Thanks for the advice, everyone!

i lucked out and got a high enough score on the english section of my ACT to place out of eng. 100, 101, and 102. i have to take the math subject test the morning of my prom though to try and place out of some classes :(

Hello! (my first post on here... I haven't done forums in a while)
For the Math-II I would recommend using the Sparknotes site: SparkNotes: SAT Subject Test: Math Level 2
I took it last year and miraculously made an 800, with only glancing over the Sparknotes and doing the practice questions in a Subject Test booklet from my counselor's office - so with luck you can pull off the same! =) Supposedly the curve for the scoring is ridiculously generous.

Also - I'm from Charlotte too! And more than likely going to UNC =D

STUDY for it. it is dumb not to study for it, especially since it's an achievement test and not an aptitude test. use the spark notes stuff, or really anything. buy one of the books. a worthy investment.

haha thanks!
I'm not absolutely sure yet! Still waiting on a few schools to get back... but I think I left most of my heart at UNC the first time I visited last spring =)

And I just noticed I spelled your username wrong, apologies...
