Oh yes I know mom2college, but a Catholic environment is a Catholic environment, and I’m not Catholic. Like I said, not something that appeals to me, but not something that I would overlook.

So, an EFC of 20k means you pay 20k of the entire COA, not 20k of the tuition + living expenses? This is very good news. Did not realize that. Sad how uninformed I am.

Oh I applied to Drexel because of the free app. Not seriously interested, but will just be another option.

FYI: The honors college application (both University and CBHP) has been open for some time…my son received his Honors college acceptance in less than 24 hours…must be a good time to apply!
Go to myBama, click the “Academics” tab, and scroll down until you see the Honors College section. It’s all there.

Well…not exactly…

First of all…you’re talking about FAFSA EFC.

Your FAFSA EFC could be VERY different from your CSS “family contribution” from each school.

Schools that meet need do NOT usually use FAFSA EFC, they use CSS to determine your need.

Your CSS family contribution might be $22k from one school, might be $24k at another, and might be $26k (or more) at another.

The dirty secret about schools that meet need is that THEY get to determine what your need is. So, School A can say, you may have a FAFSA EFC of $20k, but after looking at your CSS Profile, we say that your family can afford to pay $30k…so here’s your FA package based on that. :(

And…from what I’ve noticed, they don’t usually give free money for personal expenses and travel. Often the amount that is given for work-study and “summer earnings” is about the same as personal expenses and travel…which can run about $3500 per year. (I guess they don’t want to be paying for your shampoo, toothpaste, and airfare.)

Right right, that makes sense. BY “living expenses” I really just meant room and books, I wasn’t expecting colleges to include personal expenses in the COA :P.

Par72 brings up Holy Cross every posting. Pretty sure he/she works for the school. I don’t see it as a good fit for you. Your list is good, especially given that you are in state for UTexas-Austin. I would probably take Bama off the list and try for some private schools in the region you are looking (your list is kind of all over the place, from Georgia to Texas).
