So yesterday I submitted my app for Yale. On it, I put that I would be taking, on the 5th of November, SAT II Spanish with Listening and Math II.
I'm looking at the material for Math II now and don't feel prepared.

I already have a 760 in French and a 700 in Eng Lit, and think I will get 700+ in French.

How bad is it if I don't take the Math II? Will Yale think it looks bad if I email them saying that I did not take the test? Also, if I do end up not taking the test, how do I do that? While I'm at the test center do I just say that I only want to take one test?

Well if you are not taking the test and Yale is expecting a test from you, then I would definitely send them a letter explaining the situation. Also if you don’t take a test then all you have to do is not take it. Take your Spanish test first and then when time is over you can just leave the test center or take a totally different test. However, if you choose not to take a second test you will not get your $10 back.

@Speakerbox: Yale doesn’t require the test persay does it? All I did was write it in on the CommonApp - I could just say it was a mistake (it was). Do you think this would reflect poorly on me?

@PureVision: Yeah, I know. I’m doing practice tests now but I’m still not sure if I could break 700. I got a 790 on the Math section of the normal SAT, so maybe they wouldn’t care if I didn’t have a Math SAT II. The only reason I wanted to take a Math II in the first place is so I could show them that I can do something more than humanities.

I haven’t looked recently, but in the past a number of selective colleges specifically requested that one of your SAT IIs be either Math I or Math II. If you are going to need it for another application – because, you know, you may not get in to Yale – then you really ought to take it. If you were only taking it for Yale, and Yale doesn’t require or recommend it, then I don’t think you really have to take it.

I, too, would advise you to check carefully the admissions requirements for each of the schools to which you’re applying. My son went through the process only a couple of years ago, and, unlike JHS, I don’t remember that any of his schools required specifically that you take the Math level I or II for the SAT IIs. Then again, I may be mistaken. Besides, your list of schools may be very different from my son’s.

For whatever it’s worth, I’d also advise you not to worry too much if you don’t end up taking the Math II in spite of having reported that you would. Consult your guidance counselor or someone with real experience in the admissions process as to whether you ought to write a letter of explanation, but my instinct would be not to do it. So long as you satisfy the admissions requirements, you should be fine. No need to draw attention to the change. But, again, I’d double check with someone who is steeped in the admissions process.

I really wish I had an answer to that question, I do know that many Universities require the Math 2 SAT but i believe those are mainly Engineering schools like MIT and Cal-tech. Yale might not require a Math subject test, but I have no clue. Also, even if it is a mistake, i think it is just a good idea to let Yale know what is going on. Just as a gesture to the admissions people because from what i learned from Admissions officer they work double time to make sure every part of the application is complete for each applicant. But hmm, i don’t think it is too big of a deal as long as you have two other subject tests…but why risk it? Goodluck!

If you are submitting the SAT then you must submit any two SAT subject tests (i.e. it doesn’t need to be Math II). If you submit the ACT with writing you don’t have to take any SAT subject level tests.
