Last minute invite to honors college

I posted about this in another thread but just wondering if anybody else had this experience. Son accepted early round of regular decision, Feb. 10; offered $30k/yr scholarship, but not invited to Honors college. He was excited by his acceptance but disappointed but Northeastern remained high on his list. Finally Whittled his choices from 10 to 2 and finally made the deposit to Northeastern on Tuesday the 28th. Last night he will filling out the housing/roommate survey
and it ask a question about honors housing. We knew he wasn’t in it but it was a required field so he responded and submitted the form. Then we noticed another link asking him to accept his offer to be in honors. We kept thinking there was a mistake. But he clicked it . Then he went back into his portal where his original acceptance, scholarship and financial aid announcements were and sure enough there was a new tab with a letter dated April 28 inviting him to honors college. Very pleasantly surprised. Seems highly unusual to get such an invitation at this point in the game but he is very excited. We are wondering if anybody else’s had this experience?

congrats! Did it affect financial aid?

@Sapphire50 not even close to the same thing, but my friend who lives like 3 doors down from me in IV kind of sort of accidentally got into Honors. She got an e-mail inviting her to interview for the honors college, so she drove 3 hours to Boston to interview. Only when she got there did they have to inform her “sorry, that must’ve been an accident, that was supposed to go to a current student!” (they don’t interview for prospective students, but she had no idea). So she left, but pretty much as soon as she walked out the doors to call her and invite her to the Honors program, probably because they felt so bad.

BUT yeah, not a huge deal and don’t think twice, congrats!

@novafan1225 Wow, that’s crazy. Glad they did the right thing for her in the end. I really thought this was a mistake, but it is definitely an official inviation, with an official letter signed by dean of admissions and director of the honors program. It’s certainly strange the way it happened but hey, we’ll take it.
@uriel019 It does not appear to have impacted financial aid. He had already been awarded a $30K/yr scholarship. Beyond that we are not really eligible for aid - just some combination of work study and loads.

@Sapphire50 our son also received a letter this week accepting him into the Honors program. We also had the $30k/yr scholarship and thought he was also accepted into Honors back when offered Early Action acceptance into the business school, so he was disappointed when the portal said nothing about honors. This somewhat dropped his interest in NEU from top 3 on his list to bottom 3 and therefore we never visited during admitted student days. This week he decided on his first choice at another school. I guess the point is that it is strange to be offered honors so late in the process since it could sway some students had that been offered upfront.

It’s kismet! It’s great to have a boost like this at the very end! Congratulations.

@led89rv I agree it was very strange to receive the offer so late. Despite my son’s initial disappointment at not being invited, he got over it, and after many visits to many schools, Northeastern still emerged as his top choice, so getting the Honors invite after he had already committed was just gravy, and confirmed for him that he had made the right choice.
@SouthernHope Kismet, indeed! Thanks!

Is your son a NMF, Sapphire? I ask because the $30K scholarship matches what they give for NMF kids. Dean’s Scholarships only go up to $25K. Did your son declare NU as his first choice for NMF? I believe all NMFs are in the Honors Program so maybe that triggered it? Otherwise, it’s very curious and I don’t remember hearing about this in the past. I know the student can put themselves on a wait list for Honors (and occasionally a few come off) but I’ve not heard of last-minute surprise invitations.

@nocook my son received the National Hispanic Recognition scholarship.

@nocook NMFs do not automatically get honors. They do get the $30k per year, but the honors decision is separate. My S got the NMF scholarship, but no honors.

It used to be that honors was guaranteed with the national merit and related scholarships, but that changed recently, around the same time it went from full tuition to 30k.
