Hello, I had some questions before I move in

For NUTV, is an ethernet cable required?

Does anyone know the policy on nails in the wall or if I should opt for command hooks?

Microwave. I know they're not allowed but I find them more useful than a mini fridge, should I bring one anyways?

If I want to get books cheaper and registration is two days before school starts, how is that possible?

Do the rooms get cleaned before we move in or should I bring extra cleaning things?

I believe so. Very few people I knew ever used NUTV, so I’m not positive, but I think that’s the deal.

No nails in the wall are allowed. Sometimes if it’s placed subtly, you can get away with it (I had a banner hanging above my bed sophomore year and the CA never said a word), but it’s technically not allowed.

Also not allowed, though I know a few friends who snuck them into their rooms anyway. Technically, the CAs can’t move anything in your room, so if you hide it (even if it’s just under a towel), you’ll be fine. It’s worth noting that many dorms have microwaves in lounges, so it might not be worth it. The only people I know who actually used their microwaves had very particular eating habits.

You’re pretty much screwed for the first quarter. For the rest of your time at NU, you’ll have plenty of time to shop around and find the best prices, but it will be tough for this fall. Sometimes, if your class its has books in the library, you can check those out while you wait for your copies to ship, but that’s only ever worked for me in small classes. Depending on what you’re taking, you can wait until you get your syllabus and buy just the books you’ll use in the first couple of weeks, while finding better prices online for the others.

They technically get cleaned, but it’s a very good idea to give it a once-through yourself when you get there. Bring some clorox wipes!

Good luck!

Oh my gosh. Thank you for answering everything! So if I already know I will have Gen Chem and Math 225, can I go ahead and buy those books now? They will be the same book the school offers?

I meant to say, the teacher won’t have a different book than in thw bookstore?

I’m so happy to hear you decided to live in a dorm this first year! You won’t love it every minute, and maybe particularly as you find you way through the first month at school, but looking back at the end of freshman year I think you’ll be really glad you opted to live on campus in spite of its shortcomings.

Have a fantastic freshman year.

Go Cats!!

Wildcat2016, if you have seen the booklist for those courses listed on the Norris bookstore web site, you can be comfortable that’s what the professor is looking for. If you are familiar with how to search the class descriptions on Caesar you can go to the class descriptions for those two classes and the professors may have the books which will be used in the class listed right on that site, along with such info as the method of evaluation for the course, etc. That would allow you to “double check” in a sense.

Also, my son will be a junior and he says that you do need an Ethernet cable to watch NUTV. Also, he said that he always used it because the wireless connection in his dorm was pretty lousy since he was on the edge of campus.

Yes I decided it’s best to live on campus. Thank you momof3sons, I didn’t know one could do that.
