last minute request for places to stay for prospective student

could someone kindly tell us a great hotel...suddenly, and I do mean suddenly..we booked a couple of tickets for a flight to Houston. My son wants to see Rice in a big way. Please send at least three ideas...and your advice on anything else a couple of people from a small town ought to know after we get a rental car at the Houston airport.

we are doing some serious traveling and looking this final week

thanks very much! You Owls, you who are now also sons and daughters of Texas.

Faline,

We stay at the Best Western Plaza Hotel - Medical Center at 6700 Main Street. It isn't the Ritz, but for about $89 you get a comfy bed, free parking, free continental breakfast and it's less than a mile from Rice. You need to ask for the Rice rate.

We usually rent a Budget rental car and bring our own GPS from home (although you can rent one). From Hobby Airport to Rice is about 35 minutes. If you're flying into Bush International, it's about an hour, I think, depending on traffic.
Here's a list of hotels that Rice publishes on their website:

If you have time, check out Rice Village for restaurants and shopping close to campus.

thanks so much patsmom...I didn't even know there were two airports..or that I was flying into the farthest away airport...got a lot of prepping to do tonight...many thanks! We will there one full day and two half days...long flights...I am worried that my son won't be able to get an interview on short notice, but he will get on that soon. At the moment he is in the woods cutting trees for his Eagle project...the Eagle projects in his age group are quite a phenom..basically almost a full time job just doing his and helping with everyone elses' plus he was gone a lot this summer...so we just realized we could manage this last night..

He will write admissions tonight..and I assume they will allow us to take the regularly scheduled tours..on short notice..

excited! Never been there.

This site has some of the hotels listed. In all cases call the hotel directly and ask for the Rice rate.

Whoops cross posted with patsmom :)

thanks Singersmom!

The Marriott at Medical Center is about $10 more, and breakfast and parking is not free - but the beds are SO much more comfortable. It, like the Best Western, are only a few blocks away from Rice, so very walkable. (It may be cheaper just to park your car and walk if you park at the Marriott.

i stayed at the marriott courtyard hotel
it was about ten minutes from campus. like the back side behind the football stadium. I think there are closer places to stay though. like more in the rice community. i felt like i was outside it.

Thanks, anxiousmom...I did book there as I am a princess and the pea sleeper..now I am working on a rental car...and mapquest. excited! you parents may be getting some follow up PMs from us with more questions about your son's and daughter's experiences...we are visting three more colleges later in the week..

We're partial to the Four Points Sheraton @ 59 & Kirby. Not far from campus, lots of nearby places to eat, nice views, VERY comfy beds, nice staff, free parking. Booked online rate is $75 per night.

D is a junior biochem/premed. Feel free to PM away!

We're partial to the Residence Inns, really like their breakfasts and light suppers. Have stayed at both the ones near Rice and both have been fine. I do like the Marriott beds now, too.

Faline2 hope you enjoy your visit.
