Suggestions for schools with later deadlines? I am worried that we didn't do a great safety school. DS very smart 4.0/5.0 weighted, 35 on ACT lots of ECs, awards, etc. He has received great scholarships but we still can't afford the schools. We are waiting until more scholarships are announced and we are nervous.

how about Tulane? my son has lower GPA than yours, he received $27k in merit (X4). this makes attending Tulane’s four year undergrad the same out of pocket expensive as an instate public school for us.

He received the same scholarship but that still puts it at 32K per year. Still a great school and we hope Deans or Paul Tulane scholarships will come thru. Thanks for replying!

It’s kinda a shot in the dark, but you may want to look into Tulsa; it has a scholarship deadline of February 1, decent rankings (~70), and doesn’t require NMF for presidential awards. If your son is a National Merit Finalist/Semifinalist/whatever this stage is at, he’ll have a ton of options.

University of Tulsa?

good luck to your son, collegecarter95. we are counting on the additional scholarship at Tulane as well to make it affordable and worth sending off my son across country.

Although many of their deadlines have passed, some may have later deadlines.

Really, the safety should have been the first college to find and put on the application list.

Local state flagship.

Look at local schools, state schools, maybe not the flagship. Also look at some catholic schools like DePauw, Marquette, Universtiy of Scranton.

I don’t know whether you are interested in LAC’s, but Austin College (Sherman, TX) has a March 1 application deadline and generous merit awards for excellent students. As for national universities, Baylor University (Waco, TX) has a February 1 application deadline and it also has generous merit awards for strong students.

Trinity University (TX) has a February 1st application deadline (and their application is free) and is generous with their scholarships (not sure if the scholarship deadline has passed however).

What state are you from? What can you afford? You don’t have to answer on here but
you should check your in-state schools and see if they have rolling admissions or when their deadline is. Then look at automatic scholarships at those schools (if any) to see what your cost will be. If any of these are in range, apply quickly

Some states have agreements with near-by states so students pay in-state or reduced fees so check that as well. For example western states have the WUE agreement

Is your son a likely NMF?

What is his major?

how much can you afford to pay.

If he’s not a likely NMF, then he’s missed many deadlines, but some are still available. If he’s premed, then UAB is still awarding big merit to OOS students. So, is Miss State (good for eng’g). UAH is also very good for eng’g and would likely award him a lot.

Some of the Catholics might still work. I think Cpn meant DePaul, not DePauw (not Catholic, but still awards merit). Schools like UDayton might still work.

It sounds like you need HUGE merit (like free tuiition or more). If so, then you have to go down the rankings.

He’s probably to late to apply to any more schools and we have no idea to what schools he might be looking into (cost/major). But I’d like to bring up Alabama [Out-of-State Scholarships - Undergraduate Scholarships - The University of Alabama](http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out_of_state.html)

Hi egelloc:

Is your son a likely NMF?
-yes. we were told the notifications letter will be sent on 1/31.

What is his major?
-business (career path: investment banking, management consulting)

how much can you afford to pay.
-without dipping into savings, he has $150K saved in his 529 account.
enough to cover 4 years of state school (University of California)
we are willing to go down slightly for merit so 529 money can be
spent to fund his MBA.

It sounds like you need HUGE merit (like free tuiition or more). If so, then you have to go down the rankings.

only HUGE merit make sense in going down in ranking. Otherwise, it is not worth the sacrifice.

^^

It sounds like you’re in a much better position than the OP, since you have a substantial college fund. With the $27k per year merit from Tulane, doesn’t your college fund cover the rest? You might have to pay a little bit out of current income, but you can put $35k per year from his college fund and add it to the $27k merit and that’s over $60k per year.

As an NMF, your son would have other options as well, but it looks like Tulane is within your budget. :)

I doubt you’d be able to “go slightly down in ranking” and get enough merit to have money leftover to fund an MBA. Tulane is unusually generous at its ranking level.

I can’t think of a school that is slightly below Tulane that would offer larger merit for his NMF status.

When the OP answers the questions that I posted, we might be able to help her find an affordable safety.

University of Miami.

Will likely be offered 3/4 tuition and an invite for interview for Full merit scholarship or total Full ride.

Sons stats were similar to your sons and son was awarded full tuition merit and perks along with it. Decided to attend and loved it (many smart kids there). No regrets. Currently in grad school elsewhere.

Franklin and Marshall College has a Feb 1st deadline, so does Gettysburg. Both small LACs in PA
