LAST MINUTE SAT WRITING question. Help!!!

I am taking the SAT tomorrow. Please help me out! Thanks in advance!

This is from Gruber's
A great many students from several universities (are planning to, if the weather is favorable, attend next Saturday's mass rally in Washington)

According to Erica Meltzer, this sentence should be grammatically correct. But Gruber's said the answer should be

A great many students from several universities (are planning to attend next Saturday's mass rally in Washington
, if the weather is favorable.

Why is the original sentence WRONG????

It’s awkward.

It’s all about picking the sentence that is clearest. Reread the 2nd (correct) sentence, you’ll find it’s way clearer and easier to understand- whereas placing “if the weather is favorable,” abruptly after to breaks your line of thought midway.

Get it?

I hope that helps :)
