Last recommender not working out, found a backup. What to do with application site?

My 3rd and final recommender has not been responsive to any emails for the past 2 months. I have found a replacement and will be going with this person instead. What should I do about the current list of recommenders for each application? Do I need to delete the 3rd person's name and put in this new one or do I just add the replacement as a 4th?

You might need to call the department for advice. If you can’t get through, I suggest adding the replacement as a 4th, so the letter request will definitely get sent out, then try to delete the third.

If you have not already submitted your application, then you can just delete the old one and add the new one. If it has already been submitted, then you need to call the department and they will change it for you.

go to his office and knock on his door!

emailing is not the most sincere way to ask help from your professor

I have actually called several times and have been sent straight to voice mail. He even called back and hung up when I picked up (this was after 2 rings).

Also, you can’t assume everyone lives in driving distance of their school.

lol… he must really look down upon you… XD…

just joking, but if this is the case, I wouldn’t really want this kind of person to write me a letter of reference. It might do more harm than good.

Yea, you have no other option besides adding a new recommender. Under no circumstance should you get a recommendation from the old guy because he will NOT be writing a good one, if he writes one at all. Cut your losses, contact schools, and move on.

This is unfortunately a bad situation but you should not have a problem adding a new recommender.
