I was deferred from ED. so i sent them a letter explaining a suspension and another essay.. heres the letter.

I, Sanmay Mishra, applied to the engineering school at
University of Virginia this year under early decision.
Unfortunately, my application was deferred to the
regular application process. Thus, I would like to
explain any possible weaknesses in my application and
emphasize my commitment and desire to attend UVA.

As I mentioned in the application, I was suspended
during my freshman year. I would like to elaborate
further about this incident as it might have affected
my chances greatly. During my freshman year, Henrico
County had initiated a new program where each high
school student would be assigned a laptop. The laptops
were configured such that the students would not be
able to play games or do anything irrelevant to school
work. However, I was negligent of this policy and I
reconfigured my laptop to suit my needs. Until this
day, I still regret my actions and wish that day never
happened. I hope that the admission office didn’t
assume the suspension to be a result of cheating or
some sort of serious violent misdemeanor. Other than
the suspension, my school record is completely
immaculate.

Frankly, I request that this incident be regarded
leniently, and my academic record more strictly.
Academically, my senior year has been the best among
my 4 years in high school. I plan to explain further
on the mid-year report. Finally, I would like to
reiterate once again that University of Virginia is
definitely my top priority school. I have visited the
campus twice since October and I have begun to like it
even more.

Please feel free to contact me if you need further
information. Thank you for your consideration.

LAST INFO..

as i mentioned in the letter, my first semester is rocking. 6 A's and 1 B in 4 ap classes. but the b is in physics. since i am applying to engineering. could that hurt? my gpa will be 4.43, but my rank i dunno. i still think i am gonna fall short of top 10%. yea.. so please people, make ur best review based on this. sorry if its too much and if i am annoying. thank you

u did this and people did reply

once again, I cannot give you a very reliable reading since I do not know the full nature of the suspension nor how the admissions people will consider it. Your 1300 is a bit low and your SAT II's could be a bit higher but your hard course load and improvement balances that out. Obviously you did not get into ED because of the suspension and your SAT scores and your failure to fall in the top 10%.

I would've suggested retaking SATs but its probably too late now. Just send the letter and what's better is to have YOUR principal/assistant principal/counselor write them a letter explaining what you did and how you have learned your lesson.

From these facts you've posted alone, I'd have to say that you will be rejected due to your SAT score, your suspension, and your failure to hit top 10%. Sorry but I REALLY hope it will be worked out and you'll be admitted. I give you 40/60 chances.

i dont think its quite that low... i noticed the score range is from 600, and 620 for math/english for the 25-75 thing.. according to collegeboard.

i can speak only for my school of avg sat of 1380.

where do u go to? i have the same problem actually. my school is very competetive. around 50 kids or more applying from my school to UVA. last years average sat was 1460 and 4.6 gpa. this year its not that high, but i am in the lower end.

oakton high school, northern virginia.

dude if ur own school's avg was 1460 why did ur argue with me, lol........

wow duke3d4 your average sat score for your highschool is really high, too bad I live in fairfax county as well, and know that oakton high school is not as great of a school as a 1380 migh suggest, i mean TJ's is around 1380, yours for oakton high school is more around:
Verbal:580 (578 really)
Math: 590 (591 really)
for a grand total of : 1170

i love your optimism duke

http://www.fcps.edu/DEA/schoolprof/high/pg2oakton.html

i think duke meant for the students applying to UVA from his school's average SAT.

I'd say maybe 50-50 because you're in state, but i agree if you could get a principal/teacher to explain your suspension as a possible misunderstanding or an accident, that would be the most helpful. Your other stats do help make up for your SAT and your school's competitiveness may also lessen the effects of top 10%.

plz read ALL posts before u comment. i meant for uva acceptances avg SAT, which is what this whole thread is about. If you cannot piece that together than I feel sorry for you and plz allow this post to make that clear.

duke, who was your latest post directed at?

psquared. he only read 1 post and assumed that my entire HS avg was 1380 which is not true.

oh I understand, it would be one heck of a school for the entire schoo's average SAT to be 1380 haha, but as for those applying their, that's definately reasonable.

not applying.. accepted avg was 1380.

but anyways gl with ur choice, get the suspension thing fixed and u'll probably get in.

not sure if my counselor likes me, but what the heck.
another thing i was planning-- call UVA and ask why i was deferred? is that a good idea? how should i ask them?

bump...aaaaa

bump......

shiznit.... thats my new word for bump

NEED to take the SATs again, Since you want to do engineering try pushing your math score. Its easier to raise math than verbel. The rest of your app is great (gpa, instate, etc.) except of course the suspension (i think you did everything u could do, i wouldn't call UVA). I think your best bet is to RAISE your math score. (I think that was my key in).

Oh about the counsler: i had one that hated me( dont ask), but i just went to the director of student services, and ask him to change my counsler, it worked.

change your counselor? what do u mean? i cant change mine since its been 4 years. i dint mean my counselor hated me. but she doesnt like me much either. so i dont know if i can depend on her on a good rec. besides, i dont think she knew about the suspension til lthis year. and i am gonna feel wierd telling here what to put on the letter. and about the sSAT's i ahve already take it 3 times. and cant take it again

btw, what were ur stats.
