Hi! I'm currently a sophomore at a public high school in Pennsylvania. I've been interested in attending a boarding school since 8th grade but my parents were against it because of my health. This year I've been doing much better physically and very recently (since one week ago) my parents decided they were for the idea and gave the approval to start searching.
Unfortunately its VERY late to start the process so I was wondering if anyone could give some suggestions for schools that somewhat fits my search criteria and might be still accepting. I checked out the SCCA list but I also realize that some schools might have open spots if I call.

The kind of school I'm looking for is:
-has Latin AP
-has Biology AP
-has a strong music program (I play flute and I love it :])
-smaller community (I have 1,000 kids in my grade at my current HS so anything significantly less than that is fine)

My parents don't want to send me too far so we're looking for a school preferably within 4 or 3 hours away from Philadelphia.

We already checked out the Hill's school, but somehow it didn't feel right for me. I called Mercersburg and even though they are accepting applications, they are already full.

I still have to take the SSAT (will use the flex program) but I've had the SSAT book for years so I'm ready to take the test.

My parents and my guidance counselor are very supportative. I'm planning on repeating 10th grade.

Are there any suggestions for schools? I was kinda running out of ideas so I was hoping someone on this forum might be able to help me out.

If you need financial aid it will be challenging. I think almost all schools will offer AP Latin and AP Biology.

If you like Mercersburg, you should apply even if it is for the waitlist. Take a look at the George School and Westtown. While they are probably full, if you like Blair you could apply for the waitlist. I don't know much about Wyoming Seminary except that it has a high day population and a large international boarding population. It is in PA and might be worth a look. In NJ, you could contact the Hun School of Princeton. Again, it has a smaller boarding population, but it is in a nice town. Good luck!

what burb parent said is pretty accurate and another suggestion is that if you live close enough to pittsburgh shady side academy has 5 day boarding and is a good school. However, that too, has a lot of day students.

Another option is to wait and do a PG year, then you could have a larger lists of schools you could choose from that meet your criteria rather than choosing a school that you might not be happy with off the SCCA list. This is just a suggestion though! good luck!

I would definitely look at Wyoming Seminary. It is the kind of school where students get to know their teachers and build relationships that last. They also have great college counseling. (In fact, their counseling department helped my daughter in her search.)

I have a school that fits your requirements well but is far from Pennsylvania. I currently go to Stevenson School in California. We have Bio AP, a Latin AP (not sure if this is a formal class or just help by a teacher, nevertheless students do take the AP test). The school has been known to accept students two weeks before the school year starts. School population is in the 500s, with fairly small class sizes. As for the music program, I'm not in it myself but I remember when I was applying I was impressed by a trip by some of the students to Carnegie Hall and the strong musical roots in nearby Monterey (search Jazz festival) and Carmel (artist's haven). It's not that hard to get into, but is very expensive and has a small endowment due to it being a very young school, about 50 years (in fact, its the youngest school to be inducted into NHS, i think).
