I'm currently a freshman at a state school. Coming into college, I thought I'd be a math/economics major so I took nothing but classes in those subjects 1st semester (calc 3, intermediate micro, etc).

I've only recently decided that I want to go to med school, but was worried if I still have a shot at the top schools.

I have AP credit for Bio/Chem/Physics so I can jump into orgo sophomore year, but I realize that many schools still require upper level sciences in lieu of AP credit, as well as English classes.

What would be the best times to take the MCAT/apply to schools, in my case? Would applying to med schools be slightly more difficult for me? Thanks in advance.

You’re a freshman, so you have plenty of time. If you can place into ochem then you’re probably not behind at all. Most med schools don’t require much else in terms of classes other than Bio, Chem, Ochem, Physics (all with lab). Often those that place out of bio/chem/physics with APs either take upper level courses in those departments to fulfill the requirement or they retake them. Courses such as English that may be required by med schools are usually part of the gen eds of your university anyway.

Scrizto is right logistically, OP; however, you seem a bit high-strung and anxious. You’re going to need to let that go or med school prereqs will destroy you, and if they don’t the MCAT and/or the application process will. Being calm, cool, and confident are important qualities in most professions and medicine is no different. Approaching pts w scary, sharp instruments and seeming afraid yourself is NOT going to get a great response! Likewise, always freaking about anything that could go wrong isn’t going to make your RNs particularly pleased to work with you…

Haha, I’m sorry if I came off that way apumic. I guess this sudden decision has put a little bit of stress on me. Thanks for comforting me about the logistics!

I would advise to retake Bio/Chem/Physics. AP classes are much easier than college classes, even if they use the same texbook (as in my D’s Bio class, weed out killer).

I wouldn’t pass judgement on the OP based on one post, maybe I would if it went something like “hay guys can I still b pre- medd if i were business freshman yr bump helppp cmon 26 views!!! bump helpppp plzzz”

Anyway, know that all of the prerequisites just needed to be completed before entering medical school. As in, you could take a requirement your senior year while you’re applying and it’d still be okay. And yeah, it’s probably recommended to retake the intro classes in college.

Confirm, do not have to complete all prerequisites before applying, as long as you complete them before entering medical school. So, senior year is open to continue taking required classes, while applying to Med. School. There is no negative consequences of taking these classes later.

You’re not behind at all. I just realized I want to go to medical school in my sophomore year, while keeping my finance major as a back up in case I don’t get in.
