Late FASFA submission?

I don't know what to do. Apparently my taxes were filed days before the tax deadline. Since my Dad couldn't file his taxes this year because he had a stroke, we sent his forms to his CPA. We don't know what to do. The FASFA must be submitted within the next few days and we can't even put our tax information into the system because of the tax information. Everything else is fine with estimates from the last year. But we (my sister and I) don't know what to do in regards to our financial aid. What are we supposed to do? School will be starting back up this fall and we need to go back to school. How will we get aid if the deadline passes? We can't do anything. I have tried the data retrieval tool for my tax information and it keeps coming back that I don't have anything from the IRS and the same with my Dad but his should have been filed in March. What do we do?

You need to call his CPA and find out what the story is with his taxes and tell him the problem this is causing your sister and you. If they have been filed, but not coming up as such, you need to tell the school and ask if an actual copy of the returns can be faxed or overnighted to them. If there is a hold up on the tax filing for some reason, talk to your Dad’s POA and see if some estimate can be filed as an actual tax form very quickly, so that it does not screw up you and your sister’s financial aid, and then a 1040x be filed later at their leisure.

If too much is up in the air due to all of this, this might be a year for the two of you to sit out. Your schools might not give you the funds to go, be aware. College is not the be all to end all when there are other serious things happening in life. To use up certain entitlement funds which are limited at a time when you might not make it through the term due to adverse events in your life may not be a good idea because you can run out of that money or end up not able to get it for a while. That has happened a lot of times to a lot of kids.

It sounds like you are both college students now. Please…go,to the financial aid office and explain your dad’s health situation. What about your mom? Can she be any help?

The FAFSA can be completed with GOOD estimates…then updated.

But please…talk to your schools. They will be able to tell you what to do.

We have the estimates for the taxes in the fasfa already. We are just waiting on the taxes to be filed so we can fully complete it.

Also it says that my fasfa has been processed already. But like I said… the taxes are an issue.

So you need to talk to the CPA and the person who has POA for your father to get those taxes filed as soon as possible, just using estimates if they have to do so. They can file the 1040X amended return later. Now if your father owes taxes and there is no money, and things get to be at a standstill from al of this, you and your sister just might have to do a year off, simply because some schools, may not release the funds for you to go. This has been a terrrilby turbulent time for your family, and it may well be the best thing to do; regroup and reexamine your options and prepare to do what needs to be done next year. Like now you know these taxes HAVE to be filed by a certain time or you may not get your aid. All of these things are learning experiences that you can put to use in subsequent years.

Just got my dad’s tax info today from the CPA as well as mine from my sister. However, I went on the fasfa and the data retrieval tool isn’t working for it. I don’t know why. Apparently his taxes were done before the tax deadline as were mine and my sister’s

How much time before the tax deadline? A day, a week, a month? it does take time for the info to be posted, and if there are any problems that are flagged, it can take even longer.

Apparently on the Fasfa you can manually put in the tax info in the DRT isn’t working. I did so and it says my information was processed.

^The school may still select you for verification.
