Late Orientation

To be honest, I think I've been too harsh on PSU.

In my opinion, PSU is an amazing school if you're the type of person that likes to study hard and party really really hard. For the non-party types there's still gonna be some people that are like you and its not as if you'll be bored to death there, but you will not have an amazing time. If the social scene and the academics were even a bit better, I would not chose any college over PSU (coz I love the clean campus, the facilities, the new buildings, downtown etc). But its a big if. If my dad were a woman he'd be my mom sooo...yeah.

Agreed, you do have to put a lot of effort into meeting dedicated students. But there are quite a few there. You were definitely not the most qualified student I know from there; there were a few students I met not from schreyer that were getting 100s on calculus, chem, and genetics exams every time, which was insane. But let's see how it works out for us in the future. Let me know how your orientation at UM goes and how you get along with the people there.

It would be neat if I got into UM as well. But then again, If i get into UM, I have a pretty fair chance of getting accepted into NYU, which I would rather attend. Of course, it all depends on how next year goes. That honors classes I am taking are better be worth it.

Schreyer students are a different breed. Most of them are at Penn State because of the cheaper instate tuition or in the case of out of state students, good amounts of financial aid (PSU is very bad with aid, but Schreyers kids get a lot of it). They are definately some of the smartest kids I've met. I'm not comparing myself to those kids. As I said, they're a different breed. I was just comparing myself to the general PSU crowd. When you see the majority of kids there, I'm sure you sometimes wonder why the hell do you go this school.

I think University of Michigan would be an excellent choice for you. Because its bigger and accepts more students, you might have a better shot at UM than NYU.

I can't wait for orientation. I wish it were tomorrow so I could get my schedule sorted. I'm afraid the class I want to take will be full and I will have to settle for my second/thrid choices. Oh well, I'll have to suck it up first semester.

You will be held back in the beginning a little, but by junior year, you will be all set--that is the conundrum of most transfer students. But i am interested in your impression of the school and of the people there, let me know what you think. If i get good recs from the honors professor, I will certainly apply to michigan.

Believe me, I think the same exact way as you do about the general crowd at psu. But quite rarely you meet a few students who are really focused in getting As and are very active in extracurricular activities. Like I said, I met some people who are not from the honors college but had better scores than we have and already had a resume going on. It is then that I hesitate before outright berrating the student body and condemning them for the reputation of the school they attend. But you don't, which I think it is unfair at times, though I completely share your view for the most part.

Yeah I'll definately let you know, especially if I think the grass looked greener on the other side even thought it wasn't. I think I might be in for a few suprises at UM. Hopefully no gay roomate antics though.

Have you thought about applying to Carnegie Mellon? I think that would be a great choice for Comp Sci.

So you're definately coming to Pitt then, frasifrasi?

yeah man, it is funny how this thread turned into a private discussion that has nothing to do with the topic. Maybe I am taking your posts too seriously after all.

Like i said man, I am taking an honors class with ten people. right now, I am jsut intimidated by this sort of environment, but I am guessing I will have some concrete interactions with the instructor in that class. If it all works out and I feel like I can get a solid recommendation from him, I will certainly apply to a few more selective schools, like NYU and CMU.

Pat, it is a possibility, but If i increase my gpa to a 3.8 and get a positive rec, I feel like I may have a shot at some more prestigious schools.

ahah, I am cracking up at your greener glass comment, that made no sense. Did you notice any change among the overall disposition of the people walking around?

here is my current list:
University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign
University of Pittsburgh
University of Michigan
NYU/CMU
-Back up: SUNY at SB
It is going to depend on how strenous the applications are.
