why do ucla and a lot of other ucs start so late at the end of september and then end late in the middle of june? personally i would prefer to start early and end early. what does everyone else think?

We start late so the 10-week quarter ends at the right time for winter break. I agree, it sucks to end late, but what are you going to do?

It is a pain, but one benefit is that on Winter/Spring Breaks you are done with classes so there is nothing to worry about! Some of my friends had to go back to finals right after Winter Break and everyone else is in the middle of their semesters during Spring Break. So there is at least one perk :)

Another perk of the quarter system is that Winter Break is 3 weeks instead of 2 weeks.

i guess its ok. How come instruction begins a few days after the quarter starts? Does this mean winterbreak is actually 3 weeks?

Yes. You do not have to actually go back until classes start, but the dorms will re-open before that for people who have to get back earlier.

Instruction begins a few days after the quarter starts so that returning students can move their belongings into their dorms, buy their textbooks and get overall acclimated to the new quarter.
