Spring admits are ending so many of those Spring soph rejects are probably those who did not get in Fall 2010 and taking their last shot.

So Barrons, any idea where this will shake out? Is the acceptance rate once they’re fully transitioned to fall only admissions likely to be over 60%, or is the under 50% number likely to repeat?

I’d bet on 60%+

I’m glad I found this forum! I have been visiting here every so often because my son goes to UW-Madison and loves it. It’s nice to be able to read about the school he’s going to since he rarely seems to be able to provide the information I can find here.

My son is a sophomore and recently decided he would apply to the Business School. I had talked with him at length about possible majors over winter break and he decided he would at least apply and see what happens. I am worried he won’t be accepted. I also worry that applying junior year (if he’s not accepted this spring) would be quite pointless because it would require a fifth or sixth year here at UW.

I don’t know how knowledgeable you all are, but is there anything that can be done to raise his admissions chances? I was looking online at the recent acceptance stats of the students and it seems like a GPA of 3.2 is about the bare minimum you can have and still be accepted. Is that about right? I think he can reach that GPA if he gets all A’s this semester. He originally thought he would be pre-med but those classes didn’t work out and killed the GPA. He also wants to double major in Spanish and has a good spanish GPA and a good business prerequisite GPA.

In short, what he should be doing this spring to increase his chances for the business school?

Needs some ECs that show leadership and initiative. He might have a better shot at a certificate in business which is like a minor.

I was also doing premed but was just doing average in chem and ochem (B’s). I applied for fall and did not get in but I am applying for upcoming fall and hoping to get in. Like Barrons said he will need some good extracurriculars to help his case. I know someone who got in with a 2.9 because he was taking engineering classes(statics, math past calc 3) so the admissions board definitely considers the classes you have taken. Also make sure he takes business courses. If you get an A in accounting it looks a lot better than getting an A in nutritional science. If you do well in the business focused classes it will look a lot better than doing well in other classes. If he has a 3.2 he has an okay chance because it will show how hard he has worked and his improvement. I am in the same boat, I messed up in a 5 credit class and am slowing working my way back up and hoping it is enough to get admitted.

To Business School applicants - Barrons is right, you need B-School related ECs to help your case - you should consider joining Badger Business Buddies:
