Any chance for a WM applying as a Latin major at JHU? 700M/610CR/540W (ouch!); 3.35gpa out of 4.0 (advanced level courses and 3 APs this year); not applying for fin. aid.

Thanks for any and all thoughts.

your GPA and SATs may need some explaining.
what about your E.C.'s...?
Do you write good essays?
Good recs?

Seeing as your SAT and GPA both aren't optimal, everything else would need to be.

No offense, but I'm assuming you're not the greatest writer, (540...need I say more?), and all of you scores are below average. Your GPA isn't really that impressive, either. I'm not trying to be a dick, but you deserve the truth. The only advantage I see is that you're applying to an uncommon JHU major.

No offense taken, as I fully realize my being accepted would be outlandish! Just thought I'd see if applying in a non-popular major (since it is my main interest) would bump my odds a bit.

Good luck to all of you applying -- and colinization, good luck with your app. at ND -- ND is a good place to be, all the way around!

I'm assuming you mean Classics as a major? I say give it a shot - and good luck. The Classics dept @ Hopkins is very well-known.

what about lang in general. do you consider that dept well known as well?

I think there is a Romance Languages department at JHU that is a neatly interdepartmental and interlingual major for students who want to major in the languages.

when i visited the admissions counselor said of course there are kids who got 500s on their SATs. they just really shined through the essays. just work on that. dont worry so much about the scores.

ya ur stats r little too low, but if ur passionate about latin and back that up w/ essays and teachers rec and extracurricular, you'll have a good chance. But seriously, I don't think hopkins take ur major selection that seriously (except bme), bcuz all arts and sciences freshmen are admitted as "pre-majors", so u technically don't have a formal major until end of freshman yr and u can declare in any major u want (even in engineering!); btw i also applied as a classics major to hopkins...hopkins has an amazing classics department- top 10 in the nation, classes r really small..below 20 students..and we have a really cool program called ancient law minor..combining latin, roman history, and law related courses.
