Latin Subject Test

Are there any good resources available for the Latin Subject Test? Have any real tests been released? I would imagine there's not much out there.

Thanks for the help.

If you’ve taken the National Latin Exam, the reading comprehension passages and accompanying questions are very similar.

Otherwise, all you need for preparation is your knowledge of Latin grammar.

There’s a post on this page that has information about prep material for Latin Subject Test.

it’s post #83 by JackieF.

Thanks for the info. I did take the NLE back in 8th grade (Latin II) and got a perfect score, but switched schools after that and haven’t taken a standardized Latin test since. I’m mainly concerned about reading passages because I’ve spent the last two years studying Ecclesiastical Latin, much of which has a simpler sentence structure and more limited vocab. How difficult are the reading passages on the Latin SAT II?

The longest passages are as follows:
|…|Q1|
|…|Q2|
|…|Q3|
|…|Q4|

That’s one page. The ellipses represent how long the passage is.

The questions are rather straightforward.

I, personally, had trouble with vocabulary words that I had never seen before.

^ Thanks. Is there a list of “SAT Latin” vocab words or should I just go with a generic vocab review?

Sorry to revive a dead thread, but does anyone know what the curve is like on the test? I haven’t been able to find any information.

Haha, I remember having briefly glanced at this thread a couple of months back.

I believe there’s one of those predicted score projections on the official CB Subject Tests book. I can’t remember for certain, but I think it was an 800 for -1, and then the standard -10 point downhill trickle. :)

Wow, really? I’m slightly less embarrassed…

I thought it had a Math II-esque curve.

Thanks Xaari.

Haha… if only all the subject tests were like Math II… :)

BTW, does a good score on the Latin SAT II mean a lot to colleges; I mean, are they impressed with students who have studied Latin, or is it not a big deal to them?

Too bad there’s not an ancient Greek SAT II…

I think a 750+ score on Latin looks mighty fine. Foreign language Subject Tests are rather highly regarded (except when you take a test in your native language - I find that quite pointless and colleges do too). An 800 on Latin is in the 95th percentile, which makes it the toughest of all reading language tests. Even if you’re majoring in something else, it may prove valuable (pre-med for instance). :)
