Latin

I’m taking online Latin classes to learn Latin I’m also learning Spanish in school (Spanish 3) for credit. Where in the application should I include speaking latin? Obviously, I’m not getting foreign language credit for Latin but I’m pretty good at Latin. I’m in Latin 3 as well and am as fluent in Latin as in Spanish.

I think you should limit applications that claim spoken fluency in Latin to the Vatican.

In all seriousness, what kind of classes are you taking for Latin?

I’m just taking Latin classes at my local college.

I’m definitely not fluent fluent but I know some stuff I guess but I don’t want to put useless stuff in my application.

Are they classes for credit? Typically a college will want transcripts of any college classes you’ve taken. Normally, that would be clear, though, in the application. Not only would it not be useless but it would be considered a big no-no (deceit, fraud) if you did not disclose them. Do you actually speak Latin in the class?

I’m probably taking the ap exam maybe I’m not that good yet but no the courses don’t count for credit that why I’m a little stressed because I truly do like latin but I don’t have anything to prove I know the language. I definitely don’t want it to go to waste.

Maybe list it as an extracurricular? Like a hobby? Someone else could say better, though…

Maybe the National Latin Exam would give you a meaningful score: https://www.nle.org/

Thank you. Do you know where I would put the score or how I could send it?

You could put your score under “awards” or in the test score section on the apps. You’ll also have to ask the college where you are taking the classes send transcripts to the schools to which you are applying.

Almost no one would claim “speaking” Latin.

Sure, put it on the Common App. Look at the CA, there are a few ways to show this.

But online or at the cc? No grade? Or you mean no high school credit? Is it on your transcript or not at all?

You’ve answered your own question. then. Sure, there are plenty of places you can list Latin achievements, but really, it’s hardly a make-or-break.

I think the classes are a nice show of the interest, effort, willingness. OP said he’s now up to Latin 3, not some random one shot try via a web site.

I believe the Natl Latin Exam is run by the state’s hs teachers of Latin.

If these are true college level, the grades and level reached attest.

I’m pm’g OP some instructions that won’t post here. I don’t easily see the CA addressing this.

Are these courses recorded on a college credit transcript at the CC? If so, then you need to send that transcript.

Are these courses being taken through a continuing education division at the CC and not eligible for college credit?

They are not for any credit its a little bit of a hobby for me but I don’t think it will hold any weight on my application.

Actually a prefect score on the National Latin exam is very highly regarded and pretty rare. (See the list of EC’s which rank all EC’s and you will see it’s pretty high-so is Ancient Greek) Also, if you plan to major in classics, philosophy, history/IR and many other subjects having Latin on your app could tilt the application in your favor. Look at other posts where kids were interested in these subjects and you’ll find some pretty great results. And there are in fact folks who do speak Latin. Speaking Latin is part of learning it. I think what people may mean is one cannot really converse in Latin as it is a dead language outside a Latin class.
Also, do you have related interests in debate, speech etc? These students also often learn Latin and they have been studied for millennium for a reason.
Depth of learning and interest in learning is rare these days. Too many kids take the same old things and then they wonder how/why they don’t stand out. Follow your passion. If you like Latin, study it. All knowledge is useful and and a bare minimum you will have a great vocabulary.

Thank you for the reply. I’m actually not going to major in anything related to Latin. I’m actually planning on biomedical engineering or bioengineering. I have been doing Latin for 3 years but mostly over the summer but I’m planning on visiting Italy with my family or with a program. I’m also planning on doing the National Latin exam I’m pretty sure I won’t get a perfect score but I hope to get a decent score. I truly do find the language interesting and I hope its just one more element in my application that can make me stand out.

Well going from Latin to Italian you will find many similarities. In medicine, many of the terms have a Latin base. Even without a career in a related field, I think it’s a way to stand out-but more importantly a way to learn something you have an interest in.

Stem with a Latin sideline sounds pretty good to me. Don’t make the mistake of assuming it’s all about stem, all the time.
Research what colleges say about stretch and diverse interests.

In the end, it’s your decision.
