Settle our dispute: I think that my D should put her name or some kind of identifying mark on her laundry. She thinks this is ridiculous.

Help us please - she's packing and we need to get at it.

Thanks.

That might not be a bad idea. I’ll probably write my initials on my tags or something.

S never marked his clothes and has had no problem. As long as your D is doing her own wash she will have no problem. If she is using Dorm Mom you might want to label her stuff.

I’m hoping she’ll be doing her own laundry. We didn’t get to see inside the residence halls when we visited, so I don’t know where the laundry facilities are and if there are multiple washers and dryers, or what. I was afraid there might be a time when D wouldn’t get back to unload her clothes from the dryer promptly and someone might dump her stuff on a table where it might get mixed up with other clothes. I was just trying to head off a situation, which might be totally unnecessary. She thinks I’m nuts for even thinking about it.

Hi Musicmaker. The laundry rooms are in the dorm basements–kind of yucky but safe. There are multiple washers and dryers which are operated by using the V card. I think it is $2.50 per load for the washer and then for the dryer also–kind of pricey!

Most students are respectful of others and try to get to their laundry as soon as it is done so the machine can be used by others. D might want to leave her laundry hamper on top of the machine so if anyone needs to remove her clothes to use the machine they would put them into her basket.

One issue S had this past summer in Lathrop was that some of his clothes were coming out of the machine with black grease on them. If this continues at Cushing in the fall he will contact Dorm Mom and send his clothes out.

Let me know if you have any other Vassar Mom questions. I was in your shoes this time last year.

What is Dorm Mom?

Thanks, joesboy. I’m sure I will have many more Vassar mom questions for you as the next few days pass. And I’m with simply lily - what is a Dorm Mom?

Hi Music and Lily–Dorm Mom is a laundry service that is available at many schools including Vassar. S used them last year-it was a gift from me because I was certain he would never do his laundry. They picked up and delivered once a week. It is expensive so we will only pay for it this year if the washing machines continue to destroy his clothes. You pre-pay by the semester. I can’t remember the exact site but just google Dorm Mom.

Putting initials on clothes is not a bad idea, but my kids steadfastly refused to do it. The problem sometimes arises if a student puts stuff in the wash or a dryer and is then gone for a while and someone else wants to use it, so takes their stuff out. I had my favorite (superman) t-shirt stolen from the laundry in the basement of Joss many, many years ago. I stall lament it, as it was an iron on decal I made myself. Never inthe 4 yrs I was there did I see anyone wearing my superman t-shirt…

My son was in Cushing last year (and will be again this year) and laundry worked out fine. We are not fussy though and socks did go missing but what else is new? He didn’t lose other clothes and they were not marked. I suppose you may be able to count the number of times he did laundry each semester on one hand…

Lol, socks go missing at home too…

joesboy - How expensive is this Dorm Mom thing?

Hi Lily-Just checked their website. The light option is $269/semester. Normal is $299 and heavy is $329. There is also a pay as you go option. It is expensive but considering that each load at Vassar is about $5.00 it was worth it to us because it was picked up, folded and delivered. It was more for me than for S. At least I knew had clean clothes, LOL.

joesboy - in reference to your comment about the Vassar machines destroying your s’s clothes - is that because of the grease episode or are the machines industrial strength and too harsh for anything but sturdy clothing? The D has some tops that she uses the gentle cycle on at home. Will there be an equivalent cycle there? Dorm Mom is sounding better and better, even if it is expensive.

Musicmaker-The problem was black grease getting on his clothes. The machines have a variety of settings and the machines are the kind one would find at a laundrymat–not really heavy duty.

Thanks, joesboy. I think we’ll try the w/d there for awhile and see how it works out.
