Laundry Question

How do I prevent shrinking when I wash my clothes? I have always air-dried my clothes by hanging them.

Cold water: used for delicates, won’t shrink. Stains need to be pre-treated
Warm water: Mixture of both hot and cold(bad answer, but you get the idea)
Hot water: Cleans the best, will cause shrinkage and fading

Hurrayyyy, I ahve the same issue: I hang dry my clothes. Where do we find the room to do that? Anybody has ideas?

Folding dryer rack at B,B, Beyond-use a coupon. Work it out with your roommate when you can air dry your laundry in the room

What’s the best day of the week to launder your clothes?

Batllo, I had the same idea but thought the rack might take up too much space. I’ll be living in a plaza ,so maybe I can use our shared bathroom. That might work.

Is detergent, etc. provided or do you have to bring your own?

Bring your own detergent. Do laundry in the middle of the week in the morning or afternoon for least traffic. Make sure you get your laundry promptly (especially during peak times), or someone waiting for a machine will be tempted to take your ***** out and throw it on the counters, which may or may not be dirty.

I’m pretty sure there’s a “delicate” setting for the dryer which will use minimal heat. Hang drying would take forever, and if you have a full load I don’t think your roommates would appreciate damp laundry all over the room. Never had a problem with shrinking clothes though, and sometimes they come out of the dryer burning hot.

VTECADDICK, thanks for the tip! The delicate setting would help, I’m sure. Well, If not, i would just leave the clothes in the dryer for about 15 mns, just long enough to take the damp out.

sheep55- If you tumble dry them on air/fluff/no heat for 15 min then hang on hangers or drape over the rack it will cut down the air drying time. Putting the rack in the bathroom will inconvenience too many people. Put the rack near your bed in your walking space during the day. Best time to air dry is when your roommate is gone for the day or weekend. You’ll find a way to work it out. Maybe offer the use of your rack in exchange of tolerance of your laundry habits.

Worse times to do laundry: Thursday night (people are washing for the weekend)
Sunday(all day)Need clothes for the upcoming week
Saddest times to do laundry-Friday+Saturday nights

Yeah, i can put the clothes on hangers and let them dry in the closet. I also just remember that both my roommates live 30mns from UCLA, so chances are they will go home during the weekend. So if i do my laundry saturday morning, that should give my clothes plenty of time to dry on a rack, should i choose to use one.

So logically the best time would be Saturday morning because those who are leaving for the weekend have left/are leaving and those who stay are still hung over from the night before.

Saturday morning -sleeping in if needed otherwise good time to use machines
Saturday afternoon-meeting friends to walk to football stadium for game
Monday morning through Thursday afternoon-best times to do wash
Use machines on multiple floors at the same time if doing multiple loads, saves time but makes some people mad, tho

do your laundry at 4 AM

So if I see someone wandering around the laundry room at FOUR IN THE MORNING, I can be certain sure that it’s GrassBandit.

i would put my clothes in the washer at like 12 at nite. dryer at 1. wake up at 8, walk down to the laundry room in my boxers, and put on the nice toasty warm clothes, and go to class.
BEST FEELING!

You’re lucky someone didn’t throw your clothes on the floor for not taking them out when dryer was done at 2am.

but thats why i do it at 2 am. there are always empty dryers/washers during then

there’s also some laundry website (i forget the name) for the high-rise plazas that keeps track of how many washers and dryers are in use, and shows you historical trends of usage. i found it rather inaccurate, though, as it would say that broken machines were “open” but you still can’t use them…

and i do miss being able to use my bruincard for laundry. stupid birch used quarters. so does my apartment now. boo.
