<p>Just wondering if folks are signing up for laundry service. It's not inexpensive, but my S just turned 14, and thinking he'll NEVER iron anything and look very messy if I don't. Is it worth the cost, or should I send my S to laundry boot camp this summer?</p>

<p>It's definitely in your interest that he learn it now, or poor you will be folding his dirty college sheets.</p>
<p>He needs four things: Coins, detergent, dryer sheets, and the ability to read instructions on a coin op machine. I think he'll be fine :)</p>

I'm sure there is a dry cleaning service that many students at the school use. Ask about them so he can send off special items.</p>
<p>We don't have a choice....and I wish we did. It's $500/yr. and my son maybe used it three times. (He brought laundry home FREQUENTLY).</p>
<p>Our school's washers and driers are maintained/owned by the laundry service, so "free" use of them is part of paying for the plan.</p>
<p>That's awful. A roll of $20 quarters lasted me MONTHS.</p>
<p>To skibum--if your son objects, tell him about all the things he can buy with that saved money. </p>
<p>Then don't get him anything. And then spend it on all the books he's going to need.</p>

Lol, that's how I think of it.
The plan I got is 750...... I need a lot of dry cleaning since Im going to be wearing suits all the time. But if not, get the cheapest one if you dont need dry cleaning.
But in my case it's worth it.</p>

<p>My son's plan is not optional. It's $800 and includes laundry, dry cleaning, and valet service (repair, sewing on of buttons, etc.)</p>
<p>I guess if you can afford it, go for it... But for me, I spend less than $100 doing my own laundry every year and it's not that bad if you schedule a time to do it every week. Takes like 20 minutes...including folding time</p>
<p>Is there usually enough closet space to cut out folding time by just hanging everything up? (If anyone from Exeter knows more specifically, that would be peachy)</p>

<p>I found the closet is quite small from re-visit day.
My friend gave me some Mini Hooks from Mangano Hanger collection.
They are tiny small hangers which can slide over huggable hanger. It saves a lot of closet space. Perfect for my son's polo and rugby shirts.</p>

The bad thing about it is that they tend to lose items/give you back items that may not be yours.
But if you just have regular clothes, i reccomend doing it yourself. It's faster and only takes a few hours as opposed to laundry service which takes a few days.</p>
<p>Keylyme, I'm with you - the $500 mandatory fee at NMH is a complete waste of money for us. We tried to think of a way to get around it but couldn't. We've threatened D that if she comes home with any laundry to be done she's paying us back for the $500! </p>

You definitely have time to do laundry yourself if you are not ultra lazy. I'm assuming that most if not all boarding schools have washers and dryers in the basement or some place close to your dorms. All you need are the coins and detergent and like 15-20 mins a week to do the laundry. I usually did mine during the weekends and I sometimes spent the whole Saturday away on sports. I still had the time. I know some girls did theirs during the weekdays after class or during free periods. Guys may want to use the service because of dry cleaning and pressing their suits.
Still I think the laundry service is a complete rip off unless you don't mind the cost.</p>

<p>You probably added that I was volatile because of my question on whether you've attended a boarding school or not. I asked this question simply because I think what you said was completely misleading. I wasn't sure, (hence I asked) if you've even had the experience to give out such an input. </p>
<p>And what I said in my post was completely due to my own experience at a boarding school for four years. It was also a justisfied attempt to correct and clarify what you said in your own post about doing laundry. I certainly don't believe I was sounding ignorant because I actually had the experience and merely wanted to give a more accurate input.</p>
