from what i understand, everyone goes through the same curriculum their first year at law school. then, the law students choose electives to specialize in areas of their interest. i was wondering, how does this work? how many areas can they specialize in? (for example, specializing in business law, international law, etc.)

It depends on the school. At some schools there are few electives offered. At my alma mater, you had one elective your first year, and only one required course after that (legal ethics).
