Law Internship - what does it involve?

Does anyone have any experience with law internships? Is it common for undergrad students to have internships at law firms? If so, what kind of work do they often entail?

I've been fortunate enough to find this summer internship opportunity at a private law firm in NYC. But I'm actually not even a law student. It bewilders me as to what kind of work I(college undergrad) would be doing as an "intern." They said I can follow them to go to the courtroom and hearings, but is that actually possible? I honestly don't mind the monotonous copying/mailing, but I heard even such simple tasks in law firms demand some kind of legal knowledge?? Would it be too challenging?

Since I'm very unfamiliar with the work environment at law firms, I'm a little split. I'm wondering if I should let this opportunity slip. Are law internships rare to come by? Can someone PLEASE comment on if this would be a OK way to spend my summer or a complete waste of my time???

I had law internships when I was even in high school, and I actually got to do a lot of meaningful work, such as research and brief writing. I didn’t do these at private firms, however. It depends on where you go, and who your with, for what kind of work you do. Wherever you go and whatever you do, though, do the best job you can, because they will notice that and that is great as a prospective job applicant or for a great recommendation. Definitely not a waste of time…
