Law School Admissions

What are my chances of getting into a top 20 law school?

I am a URM
GPA: 3.2
College: Ivy
LSAT: 170

I ask because I would only consider going to a T20 schools. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Lock for the T20 (unless you have C&F issues). Bottom of T14 is possible.

Retake. A point or two higher and the t14 is looking good.

And, with a year or two of work experience, you’ll have a great shot at Northwestern (#11).

Don’t waste your money on a T15+, unless they offer a full tuition discount.

Go to your career services office and look at the law school grids for your school. You will have a better idea as to how people from your school fare in the admissions process.

Cornell is an excellent school; I imagine that your 3.2 from there would get you further than a 3.2 from most universities. That said, it’s all GPA and LSAT.

What type of URM are you? It makes quite a large difference. (I don’t want to start an affirmative action war, but will tell anyone who is curious that the statistics for law school admissions and affirmative action are out there.)

This[/url”>http://www.lawschoolpredictor.com/wp-content/uploads/Law-School-Predictor-Full-Time-Programs.htm]This is a reasonably decent way to quickly check your chances. It’s by no means perfect, but it does group schools fairly well. Plug in a 172 and look how your chances change. I suggest retaking for the 172 if at all possible. Also, as ariesathena pointed out, what flavor URM you are can make a big difference. Also, are you still in school? Any way to boost that UGPA would help your chances in the T14.

on another blog, there is a 3.2/170 who was accepted into 3 of the T14. (dunno if URM or not)

Hello everyone, thanks for all the comments!

To answer your question, I am both Hispanic and Black. I am not sure if this makes a difference.

Also, I will have 2-3 years of teaching experience in an inner-city school before I apply.

Thanks again.

I was also thinking about getting a masters in international studies at the CUNY Graduate Center. What do you guys think? Will it improve my chances?

Hispanic/black will help. The rest won’t. Don’t bother with the masters unless you get it free and have nothing better to do. I’d retake for that 172 and get a nice scholarship to a lower T14.

“I do not want to start an affirmative action debate, but will encourage anyone who is interested to google the readily-available statistics about law school admissions and affirmative action.” (Service Mark, AriesAthena.)

Cornell UG, 170 LSAT? Cambridge is a great city, but you might also want to think about going on scholarship to law school in Chicago or NYC.

Assuming you are male, you’re golden.
