Lawrence University -- Checking In after 4 years

Greetings All. I wanted to check in and provide a brief update for the wonderful parents who frequent this forum. About six years ago, I stumbled upon this resource when my daughter decided she wanted to pursue a performance degree in voice. Although an academic by "trade," I had no knowledge of the delightfully complicated world of auditions, studio placement, performance opportunities, etc. etc. Through this terrific forum, I was guided and informed and ultimately, D benefitted from that information and chose to attend the Conservatory at Lawrence. I'm happy to say that it was a wonderful decision. She double-majored in vocal performance and music education. She played in the orchestra, she performed in several productions and was the lead in this year's opera. She was part of the LU choir that brought the house down at last year's ACDA convention. D now has her senior recital behind her and is off to an opera training program this summer. She will finish her student teaching next year and plans to apply to graduate schools in vocal performance for the Fall of 2011.

I really can't say enough positive things about LU and our experiences over the years. It really is a very special place with very talented and generous faculty -- in all departments. The students are bright, well-rounded and dedicated -- of course there is some competition within the conservatory but it does not the dominate the atmosphere. There are many great schools and wonderful programs out there. We visited several great schools when D was deciding. For those who are considering LU, it's worth a serious look.

Again, my heartfelt gratitude to the parents who offered their knowledge and experience. I don't check in frequently but you may certainly PM me if I can be of help to any of you who have sons or daughters looking at LU.

Nice post, musicmomic. It’s great to hear how admission stories turned out four years later. Any other parents of soon-to-be-graduates want to chime in?

I discovered Lawrence and CC simultaneously a few years ago when one day at the very start of D’s school search I googled “Oberlin v. Bard” and up popped a CC post titled “Oberlin v. Bard v. Lawrence.” It was by wmgan, I think, before he went to Bard. D is now finishing her freshman year at Lawrence (she played in the pit for that opera, musicmomic!) and her experience there promises to be everything we hoped for her: a serious path forward in performance, fellow students who are genuine and engaged and talented in myriad ways, and room to grow and learn in a pretty solid liberal arts context.

This forum has been incredibly helpful and also a great source of pleasure to me. That must be why I am still reading! Thank you all!
