Can someone please tell me why Lawrenceville seems to be disrespectful/doesn't care about its candidates? I guess they feel they have no competitition in the NJ area, but there is Peddie and other great schools...me and a couple people have had trouble getting interviews there. I really don't see why the deadline for interviews is so early...not giving a candidate an interview is just a rejection in his/her face really...Other schools try to reach out to their candidates, e-mail them, and are happy to schedule interviews but Lawrenceville has seemed like they don't care..Has anybody experienced this? Why is this?

yeah there was another thread called cold shoulder from lawrenceville or something where someone couldnt schedule an interview.
but i decided to apply really late and called on Decemeber 13th and they scheduled an interview for me that will be at the end of January. whenever i emailed them with questions and stuff about the application they responded pretty promptly.

others have had problems with lawrenceville but i havent had any at all. in fact they have been very punctual and sent me a prospectus. their response to my inquiry was a lot faster than peddie’s.

[thread=1044226]cold shoulder from lawrenceville?[/thread]

No problems with either lawrenceville or Peddie. Very gracious and friendly.

A peice of advice to OP: By the way, you need the school more than the school needs you, so check your attitude at the door. Try to meet their deadlines and don’t expect them to bend over backwards for you.

It’s frustrating, but call again and try to impress upon someone you need their help in scheduling an interview. Apologize that you are so late, but that it is really important to you. Ask if you can do a skype, interview with an alumni or anything, because this is so important to you. Good Luck

We scheduled an interview last year and they were full, but set one up for early February. Two days before our flight all the airports were closed because of the upcoming snowstorm. So they scheduled a phone interview and although I wasn’t included, I heard my daughter laughing and jovial the entire time.

The reality is - there is a limited amount of resources available for interviews and the reaction you get may depend on a lot of factors including approach.

Chances are, the slots are full at this late date and probably filled early. But of all the schools, I did remember them having interview times available after every one else’s deadlines.

Be polite. Be understanding. They’re swamped and I can guarantee with absolute certainty they are on the receiving end of a lot of pushy parents and alum trying to snag the final spots who aren’t being polite.

Lville dosnt care less about their financial aid applicants i called a few weeks ago and they gave me the cold shoulder like crazy, i called and asked for a fee waiver and the person was like well we have to look at your parents tax returns and it may take up to 3 weeks, i called andover and deerfield that same day and they kindly gave me fee waivers, all the person at andover asked me was is the fee a hardship for your family and i said yes im currently on FA at my prep school right now, i couldnt believe how lville made such a big deal out of it if their going to treat their financial aid applicants like that im not even going to bother applying

deerhotch - they are only going by the rules… Lawrenceville does not have as much money as some of its rival schools and cannot give waivers left and right. I found when applying to college all institutions are very strict on providing paperwork. Welcome to the real world.

deerhotch, are you referring to a fee waiver for the Parents Financial Statement? School & Student Services only gives each participating school a few fee waivers to give at their discretion. Most schools have many more requests for waivers than they have available. Thus, they need to vet each request thoroughly and that may include asking for financial documents in advance.

well deerfield, hotchkiss, and andover didnt seem to mind to give me a fee waiver…

Deerfield, Hotchkiss, and Andover are not 5 miles away from a bridge called “Trenton Makes, the World Takes”.

Trenton, once a manufacturing capital of the world, has now fallen on bad times. Hundreds of students from there would love to attend Lawrenceville if only they could get fee waivers and FAs.

My personal opinion - if you think they are rude, then don’t apply. Period.

Money at those schools are supplied by alumni and other fundraising. They have thousands of people knocking on their doors wanting a spot. And despite the economy, lots of people who are full-pays (just look at school stats for % FA).

So although I’m sorry several people thought they were rude, the truth is - maybe it’s a message the school is not for you. Just move on and find one that is.

They were very polite to me without knowing my background. They’ve been responsive to a lot of other people on the list. So take it for what it’s worth.

If it were true, we wouldn’t need fancy viewbooks and all the marketing materials.

yea i agree with pulsar if they have so many full blow applicants why to they bother sending me their phony little viewbooks? i honestly dont feel that full blown candiates really need the opportunity of boarding school to be quite honest full FA student need the opportunity alot more and they get more out of the school

Probably because they - like all boarding schools, just like messing with your heads, whipping you into a frenzy of hope for getting into a school that already marked your apps Dead on Arrival. They just collect your $50 fees so they can pay for the psychotherapist needed to deprogram them after reading essays repurposed from old CC threads by those with over-inflated entitlement issues - or at least trying to match the clearly faked stats to the apps from posters whining about not getting treated like royalty.

Or perhaps they like feeding the CC ■■■■■■.

(note: to the sane people reading this sad thread – I’m being facetious – just feeding the ■■■■■■)

Also schools really like bragging about their acceptance rates and some applicants/families may base their view of a school on the acceptance rates. If their fancy viewbooks can bring in more applicants then its a success.

More applicants + same number of seats = lower acceptance rate.

EMA, That was a good exhale for someone on a slippery slope with their arguments.

I do believe people receive view books upon request… so why have view books? Because someone must want them.
