GO LAWRENCEVILLE
size=1(jokes, you know, since hill weekend's coming up)[/size]

Dapple, What do you like most about L’ville? How do you find the Humanities (English, History) and Math courses and teachers? Do they have Math, Science, Debate Clubs/Teams? How are the people, competitive, snobby, entitled, friendly? Thanks.

Welcome, Dapple, to your first Hill week.

LLVILLE and Dapple—have a great time this week. My d goes to DA and we were touring last year when Choate day came to DA. It was amazing to see the kids not so much anti-Choate but pro DA. This is a wonderful time to show the other school and those visiting how proud you are to be where you are.

The attitude of the DA students had a great impact on my d, especially in terms of the sense of community we saw.

My loyalties are surely with you Lawerenceville over Hill. My d was accepted there but decided on DA.

Good Luck and have tons of fun.

We have been very impressed with the behaviour of DA athletes, parents, and students. Unfortunately, we can’t say the same with a few of the schools we’ve visited in away games. Some of the away schools have been outright vicious.

How’s the arts programs–mostly theatre and dance?
Also how are the dorms??

Hi Dapple, & congratulations on Lawrenceville. Can you tell us what it is like for you so far? What is the culture of the school? How competitive vs. supportive are the other students? What is the relationship between the boarders & day students like? And what made you decide that this was the school for you? Best wishes for the rest of your freshman year!

What are the schools you applied to/considered. Why was L’ville in the mix?

I guess I will fill in some responses here since I guess Dapple is busy with exams and I’m on a break…

Invent: My favorite part of lville is the house system. It is very unique to the school and it is great feeling part of something so great. All of my best friends are in my house I basically am with them 24/7. Classes are great. Traditionally, the school is felt to be a little weaker in lower level math, but it really depends on which teachers you have. I have not had any problems. We have every club you could think of it seems and it is really easy to start a new one. In fact, I just started a new club two weeks ago and it already seems to be one of the most popular clubs in the school! All sorts of people come here, it is hard to generalize everyone…

TheatreGeek1: We have very strong theater and dance programs. All students are required to play a sport that will meet minimum 3 times a week. Dance is one of these options. There is at least one major theater production every month.

2kidsnoanswers: I very quickly fell in love with lville 3 years ago when I entered as a new sophomore. Everyone is very friendly and supportive. The school can be as competitive as one makes it, but personally I do not feel I am fighting against my peers for grades or attention. The boarders and day students are quite close. But I feel that this relationship is dependent on the day students. There are some day students who get to school when I am waking up (~7am) and leave when I am going to sleep (~11pm). They basically are boarders it seems! There are also a number of day students who sleep over at school often. In fact, there is one kid in my dorm who has slept at school for the past five days… this is somewhat uncommon but kids do stay over on the weekends a lot.

SevenDad: I was in public school before Lville. My father attended lawrenceville, but I never planned on attending. But then I started to not like the magnet program I was in, so I began exploring other options. I knew my father went to lawrenceville and included it in my search. I then had a tour and knew I wanted to come to lawrenceville. So in the end, I only sent in a Lawrenceville app. It was either Lawrenceville or staying at public school and I was fortunate to have my wish granted!

How is the workload at Lawrenceville? Do you feel it’s overwhelming or just right? Thanks :)

Ahh! I’m sorry for leaving this thread for so long. Thank you LLVILLE!! Because I feel bad, I’ll answer those questions too. Thank you again.

Invent: My favorite part is how happy it is all the time. The environment is cheerful, not stressed and gloomy, even on finals week. About the teachers and courses - first of all, the teachers are all AMAZING. Coming from an OK public school, I was awed. The ones I’ve had this first term are all truly passionate about what they teach and they’re friendly and easy to get along with. Also, in my old school, “seeing teachers” after classes was nonexistent. It took a while to accept that teachers are more than people you see in class. Their infectious attitude makes the courses interesting and fun. I love the harkness classes. We have conversations, not lectures. Even sometimes, I don’t feel like I’m learning, but I actually am learning much more than I would in lectures. I don’t know about clubs/teams, though I do strongly think they’re there… sorry! I’m still a naive inexperienced freshman.

TheatreGeek: I’ll be honest, I don’t know much about the dance/theatre programs either. But the all-school musical this year, Hello Dolly, was downright amazing. The only experience I have in this so far is that I’m in the Freshman play, an opportunity for acting directed for freshmen. We’re doing Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, and have had 3 rehearsals so far. The director is again, so enthusiastic and into what he does, and it’s a lot of fun. An athletic activity is required for each term, and dance is an option - classes are (i think) four times a week. About the arts in general, there are so many opportunities. A plethora of singing and instrumental groups for all levels and interests and many dance/music/theatre performances through the year. This year, I signed up for singing lessons for the first time. The school encourages trying new things, and my voice teacher is really nice.

2kidsnoanswers: After I got over the worst of homesickness, I found out that at Lawrenceville, you’re truly moving forward. Part of why adjusting was difficult for me was because at home, I wouldn’t be doing half the things I’m doing at Lawrenceville. Rather than just lounging, listening to music, chilling, etc, I’m always doing stuff, and it’s always exciting. The school is so supportive. I really feel NO competition against peers so far. Day students and boarders are friends, but again, like LLVILLE said, it depends on the day students. Some leave right after sports end, some stay til 10pm. Either way, there’s barely a feeling of separation - I find it easy to forget who’s a day student and who’s not. I chose Lawrenceville because I just felt a comfortable fit here. Revisit day really nailed it for me. After seeing how full one’s day was, I wanted to come.

Sevendad: I applied to Lawrenceville and Peddie. Lawrenceville was a choice because my brother goes and I’ve known it for a long time.

heps1996: For me, it’s just right - way more than I got at my public school, but it’s survivable. But then again, I’m a freshman, and it was my first term - I’m guessing they hold back a bit to let us adjust. We have study hall each night from 8:15 to 10. That’s usually enough time for my homework, give or take some.

heps: It depends on which classes you take. But I have always found it manageable. Sometimes I may need to start a little early on work, but I have never missed an assignment because I didn’t have enough time. The school does a good job of balancing work and play.

Edit: heps - just saw your thread. I have never gone to sleep past 11:30 because of work and wake up at 7:30 every day. So I get ~8 hours of sleep. But with student sleep in on Thursdays and free periods, it is possible to get ~10 on a school night which is great too!

Dapple: no probs, hope your first exams and break are fantastic.

I have some questions about the Lawrencevile Admissions process…he site says that in order to schedule an interview, I have to ask for information and in order to request information, I have to make an account on the SSAT website…I took the SSAT’s already but I took them through an organization so I do not have an online account.
Hi Dapple, you live beneath meeeee

Can anyone of you comment on the debate program of Lawrenceville for me? Did the Lville debate team fare well in major contests and tournaments compared to other prominent bs? Has any Lawrenceville debater gone on to world tournaments like some PA, Deerfield and Hotchkiss students have?

Thanks a lot.

I would love for our daughter to go to private boarding school. I went to one myself (colors are blue and grey, with which Lawrenceville would be familiar!) and loved it. She would most likely be applying for Junior year (even though she is a Junior in public high school right now). She has 2100 on her SATs, so I think she would be competitive from an admissions perspective. The only problem is that she likes her current high school and flirts with the idea of boarding school, but not very seriously. How do I get her to WANT to go to boarding school? How can I make that experience come alive and be attractive and motivating enough to crowbar her out of her current complacency? If only her “best friend” wanted to go to L’ville!! Now, that would do it!

You kind of can’t convince your daughter to want to go to boarding school. If she isn’t 100% percent invested in it, that will show in her applications and interviews. The kids applying to these schools are incredibly driven and motivated to go. If she doesn’t want to attend, there’s only so much you can do. Its mainly her choice, not the parents’.

Hi, My daughter is currently in 8th grade in a private school in NJ. She is a bit shy and quiet , She does well in school and sports. I am wondering if she would get lost atl’ville because of its large size. also…Is everyone there crazy outgoing and confident…it is so competitive, I am not an alum and i am not sure her odds at this point. We are preparing to take the test and then the tour soon–any thoughts?
