I was wondering which school is more fit for a student who would like to maximize his/her education in physics/economics/computer science? Which one is more like the MIT of boarding schools, Hotchkiss or Lawrenceville?
I know that Lawrenceville has a stronger humanities program and Hotchkiss, a stronger arts program, but which one has a better science program?
I would recommend talking to current students via instagram or here on cc! I haven’t really done extensive research on the two schools, but from what I’ve seen I would say Hotchkiss.
Neither really. My son went to Lville, and a good friend’s kid went to Hotchkiss. Neither are really strong on the sciences/math. If you’re looking for a boarding school that is strong in STEM, take a look at Exeter and Choate. But neither of these would compare to MIT.
If you’re looking for an MIT type education, you’ll need to look at some of the public magnet schools: Thomas Jefferson, Bronx Science, High Technology High, Bergen Academies, IMSA are a few of the ones that are well known.
@1_kiwi Hi there, IMHO, Exeter is the MIT of boarding schools. Hotchkiss is more like the Yale of boarding schools - very good in science, and definitely economics. I will note that Hotchkiss has focused a lot on its science program the last few years, and has recruited some noteworthy faculty, which we have been impressed with.
I have read here on CC the odd complaint about STEM at Lawrenceville, which I have no first hand knowledge about, but I think it is important to remember, this isn’t college, this is high school, with amazing resources and faculty and quality of life. The quality of science teaching is excellent at all the well known boarding schools, so I wouldn’t worry, you’ll be challenged in STEM (and the humanities) no matter where you go.
I’m not sure if any of Andover, Exeter, Lawrenceville, or Hotchkiss (or really any similar boarding school) is the MIT of boarding schools. As Mumof3Boyz said, Exeter probably has the strongest STEM kids. There’s so many people from Exeter that qualify for USAMO and other Olympiads, and I’ve heard that Exeter has an incredible math team coach.
However, most schools will have similar opportunities for STEM involved students. Basically all boardings schools have a science research program and students have a chance at getting internships at big research universities because the teachers have good connections. When it comes to the classes and programs offered, most of these schools are similar.
I wouldn’t decide between two schools simply based on how good the school is at STEM. Remember, going to a school with a lot of Olympiad qualifiers means that, at the minimum, you’re going to need to qualify for that Olympiad (think USAMO, USAPhO top 20, etc) to stand out- that’s no easy task.
TJ is the closest to a MIT-type high school, but its a magnet school.
Hi, I wish I saw this earlier! I am a current student at The Lawrenceville School. If you still have question you can message me privately and I would be happy to answer.
