I was just looking at a picture i have of the seniors who spent all 4 years at lawrenceville and graduated with me this past may. Because i am tearing up and feeling sentimental, I feel now is the opportune time to say that those looking at private school should consider lawrenceville.

Absolutely. It is an awesome school and should not be overlooked. Everything about it is strong.

lville06, agreed, L'ville is a very strong school. How did you like the house system?

My S wants to apply for Lawrenveville.
Let us know whats good whats not about the school. for example;

What did you think about boarding ratio ( 70:30 %) ?
House system ? ( what is difference between other bs's system? )
How was college result this year? ( I can not find data yet)
How is music program? Do they travel ?
What are imporved after new headmaster came ?
Were there any drug, smoking, sex, alcohol problem ?
How hosting family works when long holidays ?

oh,... I have so many questions...

haha...ok, to begin with I was a day-student but that doesnt preclude
me from having a good knowledge of the advantages of the house-system,
as day-students are assigned to a house and encouraged to participate
in all house activities, with that said:

I'm not sure how much the Lawrenceville house system differs from dorm
set ups at other private school, but I found the experience of spending
two years in one house, participating in many school functions as a
house, and participating in intramural sports against other houses,
created close bonds and an identity beyond that of just being a
lawrentian that will be with me all my years. To give an oft used
analogy, it is akin to the Harry potter house system in that each house
has distinct qualities (and flags). Each (guys) house to begin with is
just physically different (an aspect not true of the girls houses which
draw much criticism and calls for change). These physical differences
perhaps contribute to a differentiation of house culture and attitudes.
Each house has its own traditions and each a distinct personality
attributed to its members (a personality that changes over the years,
meaning one house is not labeled the jock house and another the geek
house for any prolonged period of time). The ratio of boarding to day
students is well balanced.

As with everywhere else this past year was a rough year for college
admissions. Although Lawrenceville still did quite well, sending I
believe 12-15 kids to Princeton, 6 to brown, and 2-5 to the other ivies
and Stanford. I will be attending the University of Michigans Honors
Program (in case you were wondering).

As for the music program...I was in orchestra for 3 years and also
played electric bass, although not for any ensemble. This past part of
the orchestra and the elite vocal group went to Prague. The music
building is one of the newer buildings on campus and has not only
acoustically specified rooms for choral and orchestral rehearsals but
also has an electronic music studio that is probably the most expensive
room on campus.

The new headmaster hasnt brought any really noticeable changes,
although she has instituted a lot of administrative and policy changes.
Behind the scenes she has pushed for increased fund raising and has
succeeded in securing the addition of another girls house, and there
are plans in the works for a new infirmary. In addition, Im not sure
whether its a coincidence but in the past two years Lawrenceville has
sent roughly 18 and 15 kids to Princeton, and Headmaster Duffy is a
graduate of Princeton whose previous career had something to do with
the university.

The drug/drinking scene at Lawrenceville is
well
.its there. But it
is by no means an out of control problem for the school, and compared
to other schools Lawrenceville is probably quite tame. If its any
indication, only 1 kid got kicked out of my graduating class in our
senior year, and that was for academic dishonesty.

The hosting question is something I cant really answer, although kids
form far away often stayed with families of day students or boarders
who lived in close proximities, and those families Im sure were always
eager and happy to have them.

A simple breakdown would be as follows:
Pros:
House system
History and English Departments
Atmosphere often described as more comfortable then other traditional
boarding schools
Strong Athletics and athletic facilities
Size

Cons:
Physics department
Lack of a charismatic headmaster
Size (depending on what youre looking for)

Lville06,

Thank you !
If you are a day student, I wonder why choose Lville over local public school which I heard are very good, like Princeton High sends 12-15 to Princeton everyyear.(and 2-3 to other ivy every year)
I am sure there is a nice reason !

If money isn't a problem, I would definitely choose to go to top prep school over a public school, no offense or anything.

I go to Hill, and every school in the MAPL dislike Lville kids because many of them are arrogant, cocky...etc I'm sure it's only a few kids that make the bad impressions. Just to let you know.

I'm not trying to start an argument or anything.....just stating one of the very few negatives that Lville has.

How do other MAPL students view Peddie?

Taiwaneseterror..............Maybe it's the L'ville/Hill rivalry that creates some of your dislike for L'ville.....lolol

in response to why i chose to go to lawrenceville, to begin with im from pennsylvania, where there still is a very good public school that one of my brothers graduated from and the other will be attending next year, but i wanted smaller class sizes and was growing tired of the stigma of being too smart...something i didnt have to worry about at lawrenceville. Also i kind of applied on a whim, taking the ssats the final date i could and getting my application in very close to the deadline, so i didnt go through the long thought process that most kids and their parents (my parents had no hand in my choosing to apply to lawrenceville) go through when selecting a private school. in response to lawrenceville kids being stuck up, i certainly thought that was going to be the case, coming from a public middle school. In fact, it's quite the opposite, most of the kids are very down to the earth, obviously there are exceptions to this, but no more so, I would guess, then at other private schools.

Re: Peddie/MAPL. Blair kids respect and like the Peddie kids. There is a strong rivalry (Blair Day/Peddie Day) between the schools which is a great tradition and involves a whole weekend of activities every fall, along with competition in a number of sports on that weekend. Peddie has a great facility and the Blair contingent is jealous of Peddie's awesome athletic center (Blair is due to get a new one shortly). Peddie is highly regarded.

Hi I am glad see posts about Lawrenceville.
My son will be at Lawrenceville this fall.
I heard there are some kids went to Lawrenceville over PHS whichi is one of top public schools one I believe. They seems to be enjoying and the schools seems keeping them very busy.

I heard Lawerenceville is very strict to drug/alcohol/smoking and often kicks out such kids very quickly.

Peddie is very nice one too.
They recently received a big donation.(?)
Long time ago, one of friends of mine went to Peddie. He was sent to Peddie because he was very bad (according to him) but now he is a great laywer. I guess Peddie does great job.

Many applicants in the area seems to think, Peddie or Lawrenceville when applying. ( we did not apply Peddie though ) They are close enough for day applicants.
Somehow Lawrenceville has better college matric and Peddie has lower acceptance rate.

I would imagine that all bs have strict drug/etoh/plagarism/cheating policies.

Peddie recieved 100mil from Walter Annenberg (spelling may be incorrect), who was also a graduate of Peddie.

I have not been back to Peddie since the completion of the new science center, it appeared to be quite nice.

My d applied to Peddie, it came highly recommended by her latin teacher (graduate of Peddie), and my college roomate (also a Peddie Graduate).

Peddie has a higher % on financial aid than Lawrenceville. According the Boardingschoolreview, Peddie is at 42% and Lawrenceville is at 29%. Also, Peddie has merit scholarship money. I believe this is why Peddie has a low acceptance rate. I think a good portion of their endowment goes towards financial aid.

Lviile06,

Does Lawrenceville has summer school ?

no, i dont think so...I know they host a program called new jersey scholars, but thats not exactly summer school so much as its a program for high achieving high schoolers

Are Peddie's athletic facilities really that nice? All I know is that they have a indoor lacross thing....other than that nothing impressive. I was there for a jv bball game last year, and they don't even have a main gym for the varsity team. The lockerooms aren't really nice at all. Only the lobby and the swimming pool looked really nice.

Lville has a classic athletic center though, I love the way it's designed.

Hill definitely has the best gym.

We are building an indoor hockey rink right now. We're getting rid of the outdoor hockey rink and building a new sports lobby I think and also a new weight room in there. Then I think we're switching the swimming pool and wrestling room. Too bad I'll be in college by the time it's all done haha.

Lavino Field House at Lawrenceville is magnificient. Peddie's athletic center is adequate. Hill's athletic facilities, like all of its facilities, are first rate.

Lawrenceville rejected me. :( They don't know what they missed.

I wouldn't say that all of the MAPL schools hate Lawrenceville. I've never experienced anything more than a friendly rivalry. At Mercersburg, Lawrenceville was never really our top rival anyway. Our competition with Blair and Peddie is voiced much more from the student body.

Hill may have the best gym, but Mercersburg definitely has the best dining hall. Our new fine arts center will also blow those of some of our MAPL associates out of the water.
