Lawrenceville's reputation

Hi everyone. I'm going to attend Lawrenceville next year but don't know much about it. I know it's a member of the Tenschools but I haven't heard much about it on this forum. Can anyone tell me whether the school has a good reputation, academic curriculum and college matriculation? What's its strength/weakness? It seems that L'ville isn't good at math and science but good at history and English, is that true?

I really want to hear your opinion on this matter

Thanks!

Lawrenceville has great academics, but I've heard from someone their dorms are disgusting.

I heard that only their boys dorm is bad. In terms of academics, the school has a great reputation. It is a top tier school.

i had never heard of it before posting here

Just graduated from Lawrenceville. Fantastic matriculation, and if you would like to inquire about acceptances to certain colleges I have the full matriculation list and would be glad to oblige.

Academics are top notch and the breadth of courses offered still impresses me.
You're right: strengths are in Humanities--the best teachers at Lawrenceville are from the English, History, and Interdisciplinary departments.
While the science department is rather hit-or-miss, you will always have a top notch, fully equipped, and very technologically advanced lab at your disposal.
Like science, math is a weakness at Lawrenceville, but it is hit-or-miss as well. I have had awful experiences as well as terrific ones, specifically, classes with either Mr. Bayona or Williams. However, many new math teachers have been hired recently, so I guess it's up to you to decide.

The dorms are absolutely not disgusting. Dorms have occasional bouts of dirtiness, I guess, but only as much as you would expect from a bunch of teenagers. The dorms are cleaned everyday except on weekends. Lawrenceville will also be spending a LOT updating the dorms, particularly the girl's "Crescent Houses." The new infirmary is currently being built and while I saw only its skeleton as I left in May, I know that it will be yet another fantastic facility that is, of course, completely at your disposal. The field house has such amazing facilities (i.e. pool, ice rink, 200m track) that the school hosts many tournaments for other schools or games for local teams all the time.

While I am obviously biased, I think it is safe to say that Lawrenceville has an outstanding reputation. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious prep schools in the country. It has a campus designed by Frederick Law Olmstead! It has a very friendly student body and faculty and delicious food too.

I hate to feel like I'm tooting my own horn so please don't hesitate to ask anything else, or PM me about anything.

I want to major in engineering or computer science in college so does it affect my chance much if the math and science at L'ville course are not strong. Does the school have good relation or matriculation with technology institute like MIT Caltech ot Stanford? I only can find on its website the list of colleges that have accepted three or more students. Can anyone post the full matriculation list of L'ville on this thread, I will greatly appreciate.

The numbers of Princeton and Harvard matriculation must have decreased quite much this year. I thought that L'ville was famous for its proximity to Princeton.

Yeah, well, the Class of 07 was an exceptionally brilliant class. Class of 08 can't even compare, unfortunately!

But that being said, there were many students who were accepted into multiple ivy leagues/top liberal arts colleges, so I wish I could give you all a list of acceptances (rather than matriculation) but there is no way I'd know the exact figures.

L'ville is a great school. It is interesting to note that one graduate will do a PG year at Deerfield. I think my son made the right move picking Deerfield....... even though L'ville is closer to Baltimore.

the strength of the math/science really doesn't matter for college. FYI, if you are strong in these areas, the departments are actually quite good - but the easier/lower classes have the worse professors and are definitely less enjoyable compared to things like ap physics/bc calc/multi (gaffney = amazing, as are the bc teachers). they are good departments, but they just cannot compare to the powerhouse english/history departments which really must be praised.

the dorms are fine. some sophomores get shafted with small rooms, but to call them disgusting is just blatantly wrong.

and yes, 07 was a ridiculous class. check their matriculation is indicative that strong students will definitely be sent to top schools.

And what 's it position in comparision with others top school Andover, Deerfield, Peddie,...?

Ugh please don't bring up that topic again. :]

Being a boarder at Lawrenceville, I have to also disagree with the idea that the dorms are disgusting. My sophomore room was a bit small (as I was new), but my junior year I'm now getting one of the biggest rooms in my dorms. Bathrooms are cleaned almost every week day, as are the common rooms and hallways.

The new math faculty, from what I've heard and from personal experience with one, are for the most better quite good, though, again, you never know who you can get. The science teachers, though, or atleast the ones I've had so far, are for the most part good, and were very helpful in helping me after classes.

Does room have fan or air-conditioner? I see in the handbook that I need to bring a fan but I'm an international student and noway I can put a fan in my luggage (it's already overweighted)
