Native students who apply through NAFOA are in a little different boat. Just got this email:

“You should receive your notification letter by Friday of next week. We have some extra legal language that goes into the Native American student release documents and it takes a bit longer. We collaborate with LEAD and you will receive your letter soon.”

Doesn’t help everyone else, but it’s just another piece to add to the puzzle of when LEAD will inform applicants…

Received my email around 2:30 PM (central time)
Idk how they sent them out , but I’ll be going to Duke. It may have helped that I said " no preference " when choosing a school.

Basic Stats - 3.8 UW , 29 ACT , black male , Missouri , VP of Student Council , Debate Team Member , 400+ hours of community service , Prom Committee, Key club , NHS, and some others.

Sorry for those that weren’t accepted. Just remember that attending then programs shouldn’t affect your college admissions chances… Best of luck to everyone else.

hey im new on this thread! I was just accepted to the duke program for lead, and I wanted to help others possibly awaiting notice of their application statuses. I would recommend calling the office and asking for the status of your application(my method of finding out the information I was eager to know). Best of luck to everyone!

Quick hypothetical question that relates to LEAD Business:

If you were accepted to LEAD Business, which will cost a student from HI about $3000 (program costs, airfare, misc.) AND, you were accepted to NSLI-Y (the overseas language program sponsored by the State Department), which will cost nothing, which would you choose and why?

Both are great programs and both will be wonderful learning experiences. One is 4 weeks, business focused and held on prestigious college campuses. The other is 6 weeks, language and international relations focused and held in the foreign country. The value of a NSLI-Y spot is over $10,000.

I think it’d be a really tough decision, especially when you factor in the fact that LEAD actually costs money that could be used to pay for college next year. The opportunity cost of choosing LEAD is pretty steep.

D was just denoted as a semi-finalist for the business program, which I assume is a wait list. Does anyone know what are the chances of getting off the wait list? By when do the accepted candidates need to reply with confirmation that they can attend?

Will they typically offer the wait-listed candidates in some random order spots that are not taken by the accepted candidates?

And finally can you actually put this on your college app that you were a semi-finalist for the LEAD program?

I would definitely go with the NSLIY program. I applied and was rejected, so it’s awesome that you got in! Congratulations! I feel that the NSLIY program is wayyy more selective and you’ll have a great experience in another country.

Lovemom, i can probably answer some of your questions as i was admitted earlier today. This is straight off the email i got: “You must officially accept or decline this offer by April 5, 2012.” So the spots taken by applicants who decline the admissions offer are probably given the semi-finalists around this date. LEAD staff will best answer questions regarding admission chances and methods of selection for students in the wait-list, and im not sure it would be advantageous to your daughter to say as a credential for college apps that she nearly made it into a summer program. goodluck to your daughter!

Hey! I just got accepted into LEAD for umich, i had a 3.8 UW gpa, except for being president of my founded club I did not have great extracurriculars, but I wrote two killer essays and had great recomendations

Congrats to all who made it this year! Clearly this is the most competitive year they have ever had. My son attended LEAD Wharton in 2008 and my daughter will be at Duke this summer. It is truly a fantastic, life altering program for those who are not overly familiar with it. My son is finishing his junior year at Vanderbilt and still maintains close contact with many of his fellow LEADers from four years ago who attend some of the most prestigious colleges in the country. In fact, he met his freshman year roommate at LEAD and they both went to Vanderbilt on full merit scholarships. Additionally, he is going to be working at Google in their BOLD program for the second consecutive summer and attributes much of his success in landing those internships to his time at LEAD. Have a wonderful summer!

Momofknowitall: I remember meeting your son in 2009 at Vanderbilt because my son spent the day with him on the “dore for a day” program. Like your son my son is from the same part of the country and did LEAD Business in 2009 at Northwestern. I agree that it is life altering because the dean at NU was instrumental in assisting my son win a scholarship competition at Ohio State (where he is now a soph. on a full-ride). Like you my daughter will be at CalTech in LEAD computer science this summer-it’s nice to see the sisters following in their brothers’ footsteps.

Lovemom: Based on previous experience LEAD will take people off the waitlist up until the start of the program because I recall my son’s year some students being notified through out the spring up until the week before the program. Selection in those years from the waitlist was dependent on the school the student designated so for example if an accepted student declined the program at Duke then LEAD will look to the waitlist students who designated Duke as their first choice. I hope this information is helpful. Also if your student is interested in business then have them apply to the following additional programs:

[Wabash College: olab - Apply](Apply | OLAB | Wabash College) I don’t know if this is the correct link but a few months ago I found that Wabash College had a business program for URMs that was free. If this is not the correct link then do an internet search.

I know there are other business programs out there but the above links are some options for your student while she/he waits to see if they get off the waitlist.

Anyone get Penn (Wharton) yet? The Native students can only choose between Stanford, Dartmouth, Penn, Duke and Northwestern. They won’t hear until sometime later this week, though.

Thanks so much for the replies on the waitlist situation, really appreciate it. D will look into other opportunities, and hopefully if the waitlist comes through it will be before we have to commit money to an alternative program.

Thanks again, and all the best to the students of the Class of 2013
