I am a freshman in college and want to apply for this summer internship program. This program offers it at ivy league institutions, such as Brown, Dartmouth, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, etc. I really want to do this program at Brown, but think I am at a disadvantage since I am a freshman and I fear that it will be competitive trying to get in because it's Brown. There are other institutions such as University of Virginia, University of Miami, Vanderbilt, etc. Do any of you have suggestions on which institution I would most likely get into? Thanks!

It largely depends on your field of study. Some programs, even the Ivies, may be more competitive for STEM areas and less for the social sciences and humanities. Also, in regards to your class status, the programs are looking to see if you have enough course work and background int he field in order to conduct research. I spoke to the coordinator at Brown and she said that being a freshman is less of an issue if you’re applying for STEM fields. I would apply based upon your research interests and the mentors available in your area.

I’m applying as a first-semester sophomore to Brown, NYU and Harvard for Sociology and African-American Studies.
