I wouldn’t assume anything. I think the Leadership Application offer is certainly a good sign that someone has characteristics the school is looking for but I’m sure there are other variables…the # of people that use the application for starters compared to the # of people the school accepts through this process. This is one of the reasons I was bummed my daughter did not get it in earlier.

Regarding the large urban campuses, my daughter started out with this as her ideal situation as well but early in the process decided she didn’t really know what she wanted so she looked at a variety of settings. We live in MA so looked at some Boston campuses, with mixed reviews. Also looked at CMU and PITT. While the city is at your door step, as a student you have limited funds to partake in many of the activities, although some are free to students. Also, we have heard some complaints that it takes away from campus life because more students are off campus. As in most of life, each option has many pros and many cons.

Our daughter received her acceptance letter today. As someone else said, a personalized, signed, individual letter. I love that!! So did she. The letter said she qualifies for the Trustee Scholarship and will hear shortly about the exact amount. We did the early estimator and the estimate was for the full amount. I hope that is how it plays out, the money will be an important factor in her final decision and this continues to be her first choice school. I will sleep with a sense of relief tonight.

Hi Icebat - D has been accepted for Biology @ both Georgia Tech (legacy) and Allegheny. We are unable to go to Allegheny’s Trustee Scholars weekend (2/25) due to a schedule conflict but are trying to schedule an individual overnight visit for 3/11. D may favor Allegheny for their proximity & reputation of their pre-health dept. but hasn’t made a decision yet.

What about your DD? What major is she contemplating & what are her top choices?

YJ76, she has consistently been leaning toward Allegheny since our visit there last spring. She is very undecided regarding her major which I feel makes the LAC experience in general such a good idea for her, and the “unusual combinations” concept even better. She has expressed some interest in engineering but now seems to be backing away from this, so who knows?
It’s unlikely that she will get to visit again, although we are usually in PGH every April, so we will drive her up if she wants to check it out again prior to decision time. Since we are in that middle class group of people who have a high EFC but not enough to pay for an entire education, the financial packages will be important factors. We will give her the money we have saved for her education but it is not enough to cover even an entire state school education, which as you know, now comes in at around $90,000. So, she will be weighing her options. We know Allegheny offers good aid in general and just hope it is enough so that she can attend her first choice school.

Bum out. I know we called to see if things were received since we did not see an online way to do that. It took a little while longer for my daughter’s SAT scores to hit than we thought it would. Are you able to remedy the problem?

yes! i spoke with admissions and they assured me that my application would still be considered with the leadership group and she was right! i just received my acceptance and the trustee scholarship

Good news hullUVAchance! I think this is one of the advantages to dealing with a small school. They are able to remedy problems on an individual basis. I have worked for both small and large institutions and definitely see how and why larger places must deal with problems in a more rigid fashion. Are you leaning toward Allegheny? What are your other selections?

I agree - the individual I spoke with in Admissions was very friendly and reassuring. I applied to a good number of schools, and Allegheny is the second I’ve heard from, but the Trustee scholarship makes Allegheny an affordable option. I just need to hear back from my other schools in April.

Just a bit of a “sell” for Allegheny, my S is a junior there, it has been an incredible experience for him. Quite challenging academically, great opportunities (he interned in DC last summer). I am often amazed that this is the same person that I sent there three years ago, very impressed.

murmur, if you don’t mind answering, what activities does your son participate in? is there a lot to do? did he find it easy to make friends with similiar interests?
