Having been experienced in dance, I was presented with the opportunity to take the lead. I have a true passion for dance so I felt this was an opportunity worth pursuing. It was two weeks prior to my sister's wedding, my cousins and I decided to dedicate a performance to my sister and her soon to be husband. Usually my sister would be the one to choreograph a stylish routine but it was my turn to be the leader. We agreed on doing a cultural dance routine, being half Bengali and half African American, with a twist on the traditional type of dance. Modern music, dresses and moves would add an edge to our performance. I stepped up and began creating the routine. I spent many nights watching videos and putting together new steps while the others enjoyed the company of the family members that had traveled from afar. Dedication is a quality needed to be a leader and I was dedicated. I wanted to have a dance that was put together and well thought out. Taking steps from old videos and inventing a few of my own I was beginning to have an exciting routine. I wanted to grab the audience's attention from the very beginning and then keep them engaged throughout the whole performance. I knew that if the dance was boring it would be agonizing for the audience to sit and watch. I took a lot into account while making the dance, covering all aspects to have a truly entertaining and memorable performance. The routine began with the loud jingle of our ankle bracelets and the pitter patter of our bare feet running out on stage to the rhythmic music and ending with us in graceful, traditional, Indian poses. Although the routine was complete more hard work was near, I now had to teach my cousins the routine. I wanted us to dance in sync, look uniformed and keep things professional. Being a leader you have to have patience and the skill to direct, which I believe are qualities I posses. I organized practices at my house, informed everyone's parents of the days that we would rehearse and also made sure we all had the same type of dresses for the performance. A lot of the steps were a little advanced but I was sure with practice and hard work we could perfect it in no time. I've struggled with dances before and the only way I could overcome it was to break it down step by step. So I knew I had to break it down for them as well. I counted off the steps and lead them through the moves. Every day we practiced, the sweat, mistakes and sleepless nights were finally paying off. Even though we had faulted at first, all the strenuous practices I had put us through made the routine that much better. By the end of the performance all I could hear were loud cheers and even louder applause. Through my experience, creativity and hard work I exerted leadership, leading us through one spectacular performance.
