Leadership for one year - should I write it?

Hi, I am a junior in high school and I will be applying for college in fall!

I did Student Council (=ASB) President (the grade system is different in the country I previously resided in – 9th grade was the highest grade for middle school) for one year - in 9th grade - and I was wondering if I should put that on my ec list for common app / uc app? For some context, I came to the United States the beginning of 10th grade from an Asian country.

I would have loved participating in student council here in the US, too, but I simply did not get the chance to (I had difficulty adjusting for a while). I know that having a leadership role is important & that it is very emphasized when applying to colleges. Therefore I was planning on writing my ASB pres experience from Asia in 9th grade. However, my counselor here told me that colleges like commitment – for example, participating in the same EC for three years.

I am a very social, outgoing person, but moving to the US was a definitely difficult transition. I love being in charge of things, reaching out to people, and planning activities… and I DO want colleges to know that. :frowning: So the question is, should I write my leadership experience, although I only did it for a year??

Thank you in advance!!

I wouldn’t make it a focus of your application since it was in 9th grade (and not since then), but sure you can include it. In the application you will specify the year you were involved.
