Leadership in the Business World (LBW) at Wharton

Hey everyone,

Happy new year! I'm new here, so I'm just curious about what you guys have to say about LBW. I'm looking to apply and I'm really interested in the program, but I have a few questions:

1) For those who have applied and gone through the program, do you have any advice or suggestions for the application process?
2) How competitive is it?
3) How good does it look on college applications?
4) How much fun or beneficial is it really?

Thanks!

Heyy j I'm gonna be applying without a doubt...I had a thread but I'm sure it's a couple pages back by now since nobody responded :(

Here's what I know...you can also look at thread from previous years by searching...

1.) check previous threads

2.) last year the admit rate was ~%20. It's 30/30 male female...and they bring in a bunch of international students. Adelaide, who attended last year, said many kids had great academic stats (23+ on SAT and top couple in their class) but there were also many kids who were very unique or accomplished in an unusual activity. -- people who got in were good at something or interesting otherwise; leadership is imprtant to getting in also; it's the topic of the essay

3.) if you would be going to it to look good on an app, it's probably not the right program for you. It's a month long not for credit summer program, about business and leadership. While of course it can't hurt a college app, it should be that you are interested in business rather than prestige that you apply. If you are interested in Biz, this is definely the best program. It's at the best bschool with some wharton professors teaching. Statistically, what I've heard is that about 1/2 of the kids from LBW got into Wharton the succeeding year

4.)look at previous threads; kids have posted during lbw ranting about it, so I imagine it is outstanding:)

If you are interested in business, it seems to be the best possible program, and I'd say (from what i've heard) give it a try even if you think you aren't totally qualified

hey!
LBW sounds like a really interesting program...I think I'm going to apply too. Is it bad, though, if I haven't taken my SATs by the time I submit my application? I'm taking it in March, so I won't have my scores back in time. I do have my PSAT score, though, which is pretty good.

Yea PSAT is fine...I'm sure they don't really care; a good score is a good score

** Correction on part of my post...this is on Adelaide's public profile...

About 40 of the lbw-ers did apply ED to penn. i think about 15 got in and 20 got deferred. A few got rejected.

Hey I'm planning to apply to LBW as well. Chance me!

GPA: 3.875/4.57
SATs: 1800 but I'm taking it again in March
ACTs: Taking it in April

President and Founder of FBLA chapter at my school
Vice President of DECA Club
Honor role whole high school career
President of the Spanish Club, VP last year, Treasurer Freshman year
Captain of High school swim team
Assistant Manager at my work (clothing store) part-time
On a year-round swim team too since I've been 6
Class representative for sophomore and junior years
Key Club: 150 hours volunteered by the end of this year
Duke Hospital: 100 hours (in the summer)

My SATs are low, but the first time I took them, I dont think I took them that will (didnt finish some sections all the way). This March I think I'll know how to take it. I also am hoping to score high on the ACTs.

Oh and does this program offer affirmative actions for minorities?

I am also interested in applying. I have a few questions about it, although it seems like this thread has mostly question and not enough answers XD. I was wondering if applying for financial aid would hurt my chances of getting in, or inversely, would not applying for it help my chances? With the recession and all money is tight these days and I'm wondering if this will be a bigger factor in admissions, especially since this program is a bit pricey. Another question is how much weight does EC/leadership hold vs. academics? My academics are quite strong, e.g. 2300 SAT, 5's on all AP tests, 4.0 unweighted GPA, but I'm a bit weaker on the EC side. So I'm wondering whether my academics will be give me a bit of an edge, or whether it's EC that will be the determining factor.

Thanks in advance to answers/responses :)

The essay is to talk about a time you displayed effective leadership. Your stars are (as you said) the typical genius stats on CC. If you don't have anything to write the essay about, it would definetly be very detirmental to your chances

Yeah, I'm sure the academics would help you, but they weight heavily you leadership. And, I would think that applying for financial aid might not help you. But if its too expensive for you, then you really should still apply for financial aid.

Actually, does anyone know whether teacher recs should be sent directly from the school to the program? Or do I send them in? Also, can my guidance counselor count as a rec?

Mhm i'll second swim's post...I can't see not applying of finaid being a reason they would take you in general...but if they have you and someone else who doesn't need aid, it's more likely that the non-aid will get in (that's true basically for every program, defferals from early apps to college, etc.)

**if you need finaid, then you apply for finaid...can't really get around it lol

The adress for recs is on the site

I think counselor would be fine but email the question adress listed on the site if you wanna make sure swim

Who in this thread is definitely applying and where you from?! I'm pretty serious about going, I think it'd be a great experience no doubt!

lol I am....from a suburb of boston

Whata bout u?

Hey, on the app when it says Cumulative GPA (your GPA out of Possible GPA), is that like unweighted or weighted for your whole high school career or what? My transcript doesn't have a cumulative GPA listed. And I'm from CA.

I was wondering that too actually...I'm gonna email the question to them and I'll post the answer

i did weighted then / then unweighted. Im from Raleigh, North Carolina. Probably no one from the Southeast is applying to this program; they'll stick with Duke's or UNC's programs probably.

answer to the gpa question:

HS cumlative, weighted and UW, with clear indication of which is W/UW

Hey guys I'm also thinking of applying for the LBW.
I seriously love business so I really hope that I'll get in...
Is a 2100 too low for the SAT? I just afraid that they'll put their main focus on grades.
How everybody else's apps going?

This is not the same as Lead, right?
