Leadership Positions in EC's

Hey All,

I was wondering about the importance placed on EC leadership positions such as “Pres, VP, Sec” etc. Do admissions officers see that someone with a VP in one club, A treasurer in another and a leadership council in another has viable EC’s? How much weight does a “Presidency” pull? I know that many people view these roles as token positions but I am acutally planning on doing something to better the club in my lower end spots.

Also, how much does the well rounded factor play?

For Example, me = 6 letters in 2 sports, top10%, decent test scores, 3 big clubs w/ 3 decent leadership positions.

How many non-presidents got accepted to top 25 schools from this board?

I am really stressed about not getting pres for a major club so any replies are greatly appreciated.

Thank-You

"I know that many people view these roles as token positions but I am acutally planning on doing something to better the club in my lower end spots." <----That's a good attitude to have. I commend you.

i'm guessing that while a "President of ______ Club" wont hurt an application, a leadership position in the club with an essay that tells them how you specifically helped the club and how you grew because of the position (or something like that...no set in stone answer) would probably be a little better in telling the admissions officers who you are.

I was VP of my school's Key Club senior year and the events coordinator junior year and i got into stanford and berkeley (w/regents) and la (w/regents) (didnt apply to HYPMC, so i cant say anything about how they view it...) in my essays (the ones that asked 'what is your most meaningful extracurricular activity) i talked about how i helped my club as the events coordinator junior year and what effect it had on my life...sounds typical i guess, but everyoen's story is different.

Really, just dont stress out about it. what you get isnt as important as what you make out of what you get. and from the looks of it, you have the right attitude about things :) good luck

Simply having the title of president is not going to help much in applying to competitive colleges. What matters is what you do with that position. If you list yourself as President of 5 different clubs, but neither your essays nor your teacher recommmendations mention significant involvment in any of them, then that would probably work against you, if anything. My only president position in an EC was my sophomore year and I barely mentioned it in my application. Instead, when I was asked about my favorite EC, I focused on a two more recent EC's in which I have held "lower" officer positiosn for the past two years but have contributed a lot more than in my presidental position in another club. It probably helped that one of my recs for each college that I applied (9 top-25 schools, accepted to 8) came from one of the sponsors of one of these EC's.

Thanks for the replies, so I guess I need to make a conscious effort to make the club as best and as successful as possible.

thanks
