How important is leadership, like school prefect or president, etc.. in terms of college admissions?

It’s definitely a great thing to have. For top schools, it’s almost a given that the applicant would have a leadership position in some way (whether it be of a school club, their church youth group, captain of the football team, etc.). Not having it could be a red flag if you don’t have substantial qualities to make up for it.

Is the first chair clarinet in a school or county band a leadership?

is math team captain enough, or do I need more?

When I was in band (granted, it was in middle school, so it’s probably not applicable to most of HS band tradition) the first chair wasn’t necessarily a “captain” in that we had no leadership role… so I’d say no.

@Greed: There’s no definite, correct answer. Do what you can as best as you can.

Math team captain was enough for me to get into UPenn, Duke, and a few other top 20 schools. Then again, I did get rejected by HPSM so I guess it depends on what schools you’re aiming for.

aiming for HYPSMC. I didn’t get chosen for prefects (I guess my school prefers the 25 ACT idiots)
