Leadership Positions?

Hi so I’m a junior and college is getting closer and closer and I’m getting worried. I transferred schools after freshman year (worst decision I’ve made in my entire life…long story lol) and started over at a new school. I joined clubs and was active in them but it seems like nothing is working out for me in terms of leadership positions. I am not the person who tries to get positions in every possible thing- I only ran for positions in clubs I was interested and involved in. I didn’t get chosen for anything except one (and the position is meaningless, it isn’t vp, secretary, treasurer, etc… but it is something). I tried to start my own club this year about something I’m passionate about, but the idea got shot down. I’m really worried colleges won’t think I’m involved although I am. I see on CC that people always say “It matters what you do, not the title you have” but how will they know that? Does the common app have a thing where you describe the activity? Idk, but I’m worried that I’ll be penalized because I’m not popular enough for those positions (the kids with most social traction tend to get these positions, I’ve noticed).

However, I do work part-time in a daycare where I organize activities, play with the children, teach them, and organize outside entertainment (petting zoo, etc). This is my 2nd main EC/job (it was a volunteer thing at first, now I get paid). I feel that this is more important than any club at my school and way more meaningful. I don’t do this for college at all, of course, but it does take up most of my time so it will be a big part of my application. Will top schools (Northwestern, Dartmouth, etc) realize this, or will they look for uniform involvement and leadership positions in things like Key Club and Student Gov? Thank you!!

Schools generally don’t care what you do as long as you do something. If you are deeply involved in the daycare, that is just as meaningful as a HS club.

@happy1 I see. Thank you :slight_smile:

Keep an open mind. I also didn’t really participate in more “traditional” school clubs and I was getting worried about my lack of leadership positions. At the end of junior year I applied for a huge leadership position that involved my entire school district, and somehow I got it. You never know what will happen. For now keep doing what you are passionate about, it will always pay off. Good luck!

@rdandwht that sounds great! What kind of position was it? And thank you!

Leadership isn’t about titles. That said, you need to be more than just a passive member. One of my kids with great admission results.had no leadership titles, but she was a top individual Quiz Bowl player in our state, had some art awards, 4-H projects that went to the state fair, etc.

@sprights student representative on my district school board. I also agree with intparent, titles are nice and all but there are also other ways to show involvement

@intparent I agree 100%. I try my best to be more than a passive member. Unfortunately my school doesn’t have a quiz bowl and I’m not a top artist but I do play music so I plan on sending in submissions. I have played at a major concert hall but it wasn’t like I was invited personally, the top players in my music school were, so I guess that might be noteworthy.
@rdandwht that sounds great! My district also has that but the students involved with the Y&G where I live have been running for positions since 9th grade and middle school, so I’m out of luck there. I will try my best to be involved :slight_smile:
