i m a junior and it seems like all the clubs i'm in officers were chosen at random- like in this club, me and some returning members had conflicts and couldnt make it to the meeting on time. by the time we got there, they had already "elected" officers, all of whom are completly new to the club.

does this seem fair?

i have 2 clubs that i m an officer but those are only minor positions. i wanted to run 4 spanish club president, but i dont know if i should since i m not a senior and cant drive. I dont want to be president b/c it'll "look good on my college application", like others are doing.

That's too bad that club officers at your school seem to be chosen arbitrarily. If a teacher makes decisions, the people who get chosen are usually deserving of their positions. Otherwise, sometimes when organizations are completely student-run, little bands of friends will agree to make each other prez/VP/whatever and shut out anyone else who wants a leadership position.

That does suck. I don't understand that though, usually at my school unless there aren't enough people or the club is brand new all officers are sophomores+ who have shown previous dedication.

Maybe you could ask someone what happened? I mean, the one time this girl got voted to be Treasurer was because no other returning members came to the meeting or emailed an excuse and it had been mandatory to come. [I didn't agree with that though.]

Is there a reason you need to drive? And I agree with hamsi, run and don't let that stop you!

Hmm...that doesn't seem quite fair. From my experience, most of the leaders were quite obvious, but we still followed the election process. I've never heard of a teacher specifically choosing officers. But then again, there is always the daunting thought of the whole thing being a popularity contest (which it is unfortunately commonly is)

But I have a similar situation where there was a club meeting early in the morning and we all forgot/got there late, and the one guy that showed up declared himself President. There was nothing that we could do about it and it sucked to have to deal with that for the whole year.

The driving thing really shouldn't be a factor, as I am also a Junior, very involved in several clubs with leadership positions, and I won't even consider driving until I'm 18.
