Leadership Program vs living at Foggy Bottom..?

Okay. So as I'm sure many of you (ladies) also did, I applied for the Elizabeth Somers Leadership Program. I wasn't accepted into the particular cohort I applied to, but I was offered a place at one of three others. I was looking at housing and such, and I realized that there is a specific hall for people doing the Leadership program. The Somers Hall is on the Mount Vernon campus. Now, while I like the Mount Vernon campus, I really wanted to be at the Foggy Bottom campus.

Is it worth it to do the Leadership Program and pass up living my first year in the actual city? Cause I'm not 100% sure if it is... =/ Any thoughts?

As a freshman living on the Vern now (against my preference), I would recommend passing up the program. WLP girls tend to be a very close-knit group, so if you’re looking for an instant nice, then it might be a good idea. Otherwise, I think you should try to stay on Foggy Bottom.
The Vern is pretty in the springtime, but the commute can be frustrating, especially during rush hours. For example, if you have a 9:35 on FB, you may have to leave as early as 8:45 to account for traffic. There’s also a sense of isolation. If you want to go shopping, out to eat, to a party or clubbing, etc. everything includes the extra step of taking the shuttle. During the nighttime off-hours, there can be waits outside in the cold as long as half an hour. It might be nice to come to the Vern to take a class or play on the soccer field, but most of the time, you’re going to want to stay on Foggy Bottom.

Congrats on your acceptance, by the way!

Thank you so much! I think I’ll probably end up passing up on the program. I’m a really social person and I don’t really like the whole clique atmosphere. Thanks for your input :)

congrats! i was also accepted by the program. can anyone give more information on this? do you HAVE to live at a certain hall with everyone else in the program? etc

As far as I’m aware, committing to the WLP means that you will be assigned to live in Somers Hall. The program homepage says that it’s offered “exclusively” on the Mount Vernon campus. Like I said in my response to ezbreez, the group tends to be very close-knit because they all live together, go on special trips, etc. There are a lot of really great opportunities associated with being in the program but if living on the Vern is a big issue for you, you might want to reconsider.

I am in the same situation as you, I got accepted but not to a specific cohort. I decided to settle in MV because I think that the friendships and opportunities of the Leadership Program will be worth the sacrifice. It’s only a year, if you think about it … I plan to experience FB for the rest of GW. It’s an experience, I think it will be great, I’m very excited!!!
