I didn't get elected for any of the leadership positions that I ran for this year and I will be a Junior next year. I will be involved in several clubs my junior year but, will the loss of a leadership role hinder my chance in getting into an Ivy League school? I have other leadership roles outside of school.

The answer is: no.
As long as you have leadership positions, it doesn’t matter what kind of activity they’re in. Colleges just want to see that you’re pursuing your own interests outside of school.

The truly important thing is that you convey your passions to the adcoms, not that you have a ceremonial title or won a popularity contest that got you elected.

I’m not sure if it’s true but I heard it through the grapevine that colleges like progress and improvement in clubs… not to just see that your a member in like a bazillion clubs. That being said… I still think you should definitely go for elections near the end of your junior year for senior year. You never know, you could win a position!(: Best of luck to you!

Leadership positions include first chair in your instrument and athletic team captain, both of which are more focused on skill rather than popularity.

Last year, I ran for President of International Studies Club…but I got sick the day before the vote, and unfortunately wasn’t present that day, so my opponent was handed the position…ARGH I’m still angry lol
