Leading Scholars

I was hoping some current students might be able to provide some information on their experience with the Leading Scholars Scholarship offered through MTU. In particular, does anyone know approximately how many people apply annually for this scholarship? Any Information on what happens if you are invited to campus in December? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

My son applied for the scholarship. I grew up in Michigan but we now live in Georgia. I’m hoping there aren’t a lot of out of state applicants for the scholarship. The good thing is they will said we will know if he is a finalist in early November… Are you in state or out of state?

We are in-state and have our fingers crossed. :)

Good luck! I hope your child gets one of the In state scholarships. Right now for us even with the 12,500 they are taking off it’s still a lot of money. I’d really like to get that cost down some more . Did your child go to one of the summer youth programs? If they did they can apply for that one also and it has the same essay question. My son hasn’t submitted it yet however if he isn’t a leading scholar finalist he will.

She didn’t attend one of the summer camps so this is probably her only chance at some decent money.

Good luck to your son!

Just to keep this thread going…any updates from you all about Leading Scholars?

My Ds didn’t get it the leaders scholarship, if your DD hasn’t receive a letter maybe she is still in the running. Michigan Tech is one of the most expensive schools right now that he’s been accepted at even with the $12,500 off a year. It’s not totally a no but currently we are waiting to see if he gets in Georgia Tech. The competition is pretty high to get in there so not sure if he will make the cut. While I would like him to go to Michigan Tech it would cost around $27,000,(unless he gets the other scholarship he’s applied to there) while if he gets in to GT it would only be about $14,500… umm… not sure how I could justify spending an extra 12,500 a year.

However for all I know he may end up a Purdue , he got in there yesterday so if he gets the right scholarship… who knows.:)

Is your DD still considering Michigan Tech or is she leaning somewhere else?

My daughter didn’t get the scholarship either. I think she really would’ve considered MTU if she would’ve received a better scholarship. She was offered $2500. She decided $2500 wasn’t worth the long drives up north and blistering cold winters. (She’s not very outdoorsy.) Since then she’s decided to attend MSU. No money for her there, but she can come home anytime she likes.

Congrats on MSU it’s a good school. Most of my family went there. My son thought about applying to MSU but they don’t have much merit aid so he gave up on that idea. We need to be realistic on how much we can afford. I can understand her not wanting to do that drive and being so far away for home. Having the option to go home is a big plus. My son got accepted to Georgia Tech so that’s probably where he will end up going. My husband works in downtown Atlanta so if my son wanted to he could meet dad for lunch. Not sure he will want to come home much though(…well maybe for me to do his laundry) but it’s nice to have that option.

Hopefully whoever got the leader scholarships ends up going to MTU…

MichiganGeorgia and Professionalmom - My son has been accepted to Michigan Tech. We too, are hoping for scholarship money. Do either of you mind sharing your children’s stats? We are out of state, and would like to know our chances, as it would make a huge difference for us financially, if he gets the scholarship.
