"Learn by Doing" in business?

For a business major, how does the school incorporate hands on learning, when it is not a “hands on” profession? Engineers and architects, and Agriculture majors use industrial machinery and work with their hands to some extent, but how would this educational philosophy apply to business majors???

stock market investment perhaps

I'm a junior business major at Cal Poly concentrating in accounting. In my marketing class each group had to develop a marketing plan (20+ pages) for a local business that needed help advertising or getting new customers. My team worked with a local steakhouse that had practically no advertising budget or marketing plan whatsoever.

In my accounting classes we have done research projects which required pulling up financial statements or financial accounting standards online and digesting the information to answer specific questions.

In the information systems class you form groups and develop an "e-business" with your group. You decide what product(s) or service(s) you want to sell, design a website and database, and then visit each group'ss website and create transactions.

In my economics of poverty/discrimination/immigration class each of us was required to do 12 hours of community service work and write a paper detailing our experience. I did my 12 hours at a local homeless shelter for women & children and it was an incredible experience.

The point I'm trying to make is that business is surprisingly hands-on, especially if you get involved with the various clubs in the OCOB. You will do a lot of work with real life data and often work closely with the San Luis Obispo business community as you learn.

Thank you Patrick. I want to have my concentration in finance. What hands on learning do they have in finance?

Ive read that if your doing finance concentration, then you are assigned and group and you are given appx.$1000. They have you invest it however you want. Or maybe I'm just dreaming?

Definitely dreaming. Perhaps virtual stock market, but there's no way in hell they give you $1000 to invest.

Lol. If I remember correctly, what they do is give you $100,000 in virtual money which you invest in a simulated stock market.

No joke, Cal Poly business students get 1 million dollars to invest in the stock market. The Finance Chair took my mom and I through the business school and told us all about it. We went in the room where they had the class where the kids invest the money. It's real money, believe me.

So I wasnt just imagining things...good to know.

<<no joke,="" cal="" poly="" business="" students="" get="" 1="" million="" dollars="" to="" invest="" in="" the="" stock="" market.="" finance="" chair="" took="" my="" mom="" and="" i="" through="" school="" told="" us="" all="" about="" it.="" we="" went="" room="" where="" they="" had="" class="" kids="" money.="" it's="" real="" money,="" believe="" me.="">></no>

There is no way they give a student $1 million to invest. There is just no chance in hell of that being the case, even for an Ivy League School.
