I am a British International Student Majoring in English and can already speak chinese. I need to decide on a third language to learn. I can choose between Spanish, German, French or Japanese.

I am not sure which language would be the most useful in the future and would love to hear different opinions. Which language do you think will be the language of the future? and which language do you think would be the least useful to learn? I hope to work back in England or the States upon graduating.

Japanese used to be a very important language in industry aside to German, but after the falling of its economy, the language isn't that dominant any more. Besides, speakers of Japanese are a minor in the world.

If you are to work in the United States in the future, I think Spanish would be a good choice. Since there are so many Hispanics in the region, Spanish will be an important langauge in the future.

As for French and German... the situation is the similar with Japanese...

I've heard that the French are not generally bilingual... so If you go to France, knowing French may be more useful than knowing German and going to Germany. I say, go with Arabic though. You might end up working with an English embassy.. Knowing Spanish makes sense on paper... but in reality, lots of people know Spanish (knowing Spanish might not give you a competative edge). Spain, France and Germany and Japan have already been in the spotlight of world history... the middle east has more potential than those other countries.

Another might be Bengali. There might be a lot of Indians and Bengalis migrating to England in the future.

Well UN official languages are English and French. I think if you know Chinese and English, you can afford to try some "rare" langages.Like if you're in fashion you could learn Italian and french. something like that...

That is interesting! I didn't realise French was an UN official language. Maybe French would be useful to use then, as many African countries speak French too. Any idea why the UN views French as an official language?

If you are British then You know how fancy you are iif you speak French in Europe :D
I would recommend you French from those you listed. German is spoken by many people, at least in my country and Spanish/Italian as well.
If you can choose some other languages, I strongly recommend you Arabian or Russian.
(oil = money)
Or simply google languages and decide which one you like the most.

I don't think that learning any of these languages will make a big difference in your "future" unless you plan to live/work in one of these countries. Go with whatever seems most interesting/appealing to you.
